Hey there amigos, it´s rich today we made our merry way across the river for the mighty first anniversary celebration of a shopping mall. Many fliers had been spied regarding the event around town and it seemed like a damn fine way to spend a morning. Festivities were to begin at 10 am sharp, and would culminate with a fantastic 500m (oh yes, half a kilometre) sandwich. Tempted by the prospect of ridiculous food we sallied forth with our gallant fellow students Mora, Addie and Shawn, and arrived on the dot. Well, what can I say about the sandwich? false advertising would suit, as would massively disappointing. No sign of a Ron Jeremyesqe mighty sandwich, but merely a huge number of normal ones on a table (they were quite big to be fair, but far from ... read more

Out of Peru and into Ecuador. We had intended to miss Ecuador entirely, thinking it was small enough to make a separate trip on a different trip further into our dotage (no comments please). But somehow we had seen enough of Peru and Ecuador was in the way between us and Columbia, and therefore needed to be explored some. So we make a break for the border, leaving Claire’s mum in Lima for her own tour and flying way north to Tumbes to cross over. Upon leaving the airport we meet a friendly guy called Walter who promptly ripped us off for a significant sum of dollars. Due to intense embarrassment and probably blame on my part I am not prepared to divulge the amount or the details of this scam, suffice to say we weren’t ... read more

Hello! Oh, if only the camera were still working! Until its replacement arrives, Rich is in my debt, so I´m allowed to spill all the beans on him.... Well, our school brochure wasn´t exaggerating when it said the course was intensive! Mucho learning of Spanish is being had. In order to consolidate our learning and provide a touch of light relief (or should that be comic relief), we signed up for a SALSA class. It was amazing. The class was taken by a tiny camp Latino guy with THE KING emblazoned across his back, determined to show us the way to rule the Salsateca! (And yes, there are actually such places here!) Anyone who has seen my darling dance will be aware that just like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, Rich is able to clear ... read more

Hurrah! Hurrah for the first time we have been able to celebrate independence Day with true Americans! The best thing about the US getting their independence from us is that otherwise President Bush would actually be something to do with blighty. Well, anyway, the day opened with our first day of Spanish classes. Four hours of mega intensive learning, heavy going indeed. However, we all had time for some comedy relief when rich mistakenly announced that he really liked drinking penis juice. haha! (he meant pineapple juice by the way). The stress of this made us head straight to a posh restaurant with an all you can eat American buffet. I finally know what ´meatloaf´is now, and its actually really good. Rich managed to take the all you can eat to extremes and was unable move ... read more

- FOOD: My bad diet was broken by 'ceviche' - a Peruvian/Ecuadorian dish of fish marinated in chilis and lime juice and served with chopped tomatoes and raw onion, served with pop corn! Sadly the desert of tinned peaches and squirty cream let the meal down. - AREA: Cuenca is classed as Ecuador's most beautiful colonial city with it's narrow, cobbled streets and colourful houses with balconies. Sadly my accommodation did not live up to this pretty picture! - PEOPLE: Locals that stare. Not many tourists. - WEATHER: Am I back in the UK? Thur 30th June: The moment I arrived in Loja at 7am, there was a bus to Cuenca so I caught it. What's another 5 hours when you've already travelled for what seems like 5 years on the bus? I thought I'd got ... read more

My time in The Valley was like nothing else I have experienced on my trip to date (and that is all I ask of each new destination). I arrived at the secluded hostel feeling broken and tired but still able to smile happily at the sweet girl who checked me in. I explained that I was sleep-deprived and manic from the buses and she took this as her cue to transform into Florence Nightingale, helping me with my bags and hurrying me into the restaurant so that I could eat before they closed for the night. I thanked her and waited for my menu. Looking around I could see why this place had been so highly recommended to me. (I decided to come here after a Cuba-Libre-conversation with a cool couple in Cusco who had raved ... read more

I know it's not been long since my last update, but wanted to post a short hello as I'm off to a tiny little village in the middle of nowhere tomorrow, it's so remote they only have one internet café(!) and that's $3 an hour, so being a tight-fisted traveller type I won't be using that much! Stayed nearly a week in Baños, was very relaxing. Kind of like an Ecuatorian version of Bath, with spas, hot springs, waterfalls, volcanoes and lush jungley scenery (ok, so not too much like Bath!) Lots of nice easy walking, and sitting around reading. I went biking and rafting, which was excellent fun! Class III rapids down into the Amazon basin, which were scary but not life threatening, inducing lots of girly screaming from our boat as we all fell ... read more

We must spend two days in Cuenca Lisa, the Kumuka guide had been adament that Cuenca needed a full two days, and we had altered the proposed itinerary in Peru to make sure we had an extra day up our sleeves for just that purpose. Arrival So far today we had done a temporary repair when an accellerator spring had snapped, and it was impossible to rev the engine. We also put a bit of grease into the pivots and hinges which had not seen grease for some time. By the time this was fixed, Mark was not only relieved had not having got us stuck without accommodation, Fran was apparently quite a lot easier to drive. It was Good Friday, and we were arriving late in the afternoon. I'm not sure whether this was a ... read more
