As per usual, the plans that I had so firmly set out in my mind changed and the 'one or two nights' in Quito as a final farewell to my friends turned into an amazing week. But finally I am here on the coast, it's a little too overcast to say basking in the sun, but I can definitely see the ocean from my room. Ahhhh. Returning to Salasaca felt like going home. We had two hilarious last nights, drinking rum, breaking the broom whilst trying to hit a piñata and struggling to come to terms with the fact that we were leaving. But finally, a group of 8 of us set off for Quito and left our home behind. However our misery was soon displaced by a raucous sing a long of Yesterday on the ... read more

Yesterday we took a day trip to Mindo. It is a 2 hour drive (but only 80 km from Quito). Along the way we stopped at the equator. There was an interesting museum where you could see how the water drains straight down on the equator line and then drains counter clockwise or clockwise, depending on which side of the equator you stand. You could also balance an egg on the top of a nail head and see how the pull of gravity is effected by the equator when you walk in a straight line with your eyes closed - it’s hard to keep your balance. The sun was very intense and Brad and Alysia managed to get sun burnt in the short time we were there. Mindo is located in the cloud forest region of ... read more

So, we left Quito early in the morning because we couldn´t get current bus info but we knew there was a bus around 8 a.m. headed for Mindo, 2 hours northwest of Quito. The bus terminal was 45 minutes away from our hostel, so it's good that we left an hour early because the buses in Ecuador, unlike in Colombia, often leave on time if not early. We arrived in Mindo around 10 a.m. and spent some time shopping around for hostels because there is fierce competition in Mindo, and we are here during the low season for tourism. We ended up at one called Hostal Sanchez, owned by a nice old man, for $6 each per night. It had hammocks and a nice garden out front and it was off the main street by a ... read more

Hey everyone! Thanks for the comments received on my first entry. I´m slowly getting the hang of this blog malarkey. I´ve been here nearly a fortnight and seem to be living for the weekends! Friday 13th June Along with our new housemate Stephan (from Swizerland), Markus, Nadia and I went out after work for a meal before meeting Jorge (IAESTE organiser), Elisabeth (from Austria) and Laetitia (from France) at a bar that seemed more like a house. We sat in the fluffy corner which had fluffy walls, floor and cushions - very chilled! (I´m thinking we should make one in our house next year Omi haha.) Saturday 12th June On Saturday, along with 12 others, I went to Mindo, a rural parish, located two hours north-west of Quito, in the province of Pichincha. We stayed there ... read more

Hi, It is Omer and today I am going to tell you about a village called Mindo. Mindo is a cloud forest surrounded by many activities. It is two hours away from Quito, the Capital of Ecuador. Our hostel was called Cabanas Armonia (or in English “Harmony Cabins”) and it had also an orchid garden. There were 2 dogs: one called Balu and the other Osito. When we got to Mindo it was already afternoon so we were very tired after all the bus rides of the day (2 bus rides from Otavalo). So, we went to the hostel, we checked in and went to look for a restaurant to have dinner. The next morning we had breakfast in the hostel, then we went to the town and looked how can we sign up to do ... read more

Kick off to my adventure So yes it is a very belated back track of my initial experiences but ce la vie ,,,,guess I have been having too much fun! As most of you know I arrived in Quito, Ecuador as the beginning of my journey and spent a couple of weeks in the ministry with the English congregation in Quito - I fell in love with this congregation - they are a very special bunch - very focused spiritually, interesting and lots and lots of fun ! They welcomed me with a lot of love, openness and kindness and I learned many lessons about modelling Jehovah's love from this group - plus how to zip line 'superman' style over the cloud forest canopy (as I was flying over it at breakneck speed it looked exactly ... read more

The timeline... Mindo: January 12-15 Otavalo: January 15-19 From the Ecuadorian coast we sadly departed from the beautiful beaches and headed towards the north/central highlands... A 7 hr night bus was preceded by Pizza and Cocktails by the beach...well, we needed to sweeten the pot just a little for this mission! A relaxing time in the Cloudforests around Mindo was followed by four days of exploring the area around Otavalo, in the Highlands just to the north of Quito... MINDO Mindo, a quiet rural town in the mountains 2 hrs to the West of Quito is home to some of Ecuadors finest birds and aventurous activities. Its just $2.50 from Quito so it makes a great place to visit for many city dwellers. We enjoyed the food there, served and prepared by locals with heart in ... read more

Mindo is a small town about 1 hour north of Quito, and is famous for its cloud forest location. It was a very small and welcoming town, with a population of about 2500 people. Mindo is an excellent place to do birdwatching, aswell as other adventure activities such as hiking, tubing, and rafting. Here are some pictures from ziplining. The cables we were travelling on varied in length, with the shortest being 20m and the longest 400m... read more

So, I haven´t been updating this thing and I had forgotten about my visit to the Pantanal Brazil...so here goes a blurb on that. I had been on the road by myself for a while..meaning I had left behin Kat back in El Calafate Argentina...I went back to South Chile...got sick...got better...hung out with Piero and his family for a while....flew back up to Santiago CHile...visited Adrian´s Parents..then meanered my way from West ARgentina (Mendoza) all the way to Buenos Aires..where I ended up being suckered into staying for a month...After that month Kat and I decided to meet up again and travel together. From here we traveled together through Iguazu Falls, then headed into Brazil where because of bad weather we decided to only visit the west side of Brazil...here we visited Bonito for ... read more
