So after our long bumpy journey to Baños, Merlyn and I jumped in a taxi to a hostel that Merlyn and booked us for the one night. We stepped out of the taxi and I was instantly in love with Baños. The air is so clean and clear with no humidity and behind us was a beautiful waterfall flowing down one of the many green hills surrounding the town.
The hostel was great but I somehow managed to lock myself in the bathroom for a while. Couldn´t wait to get to sleep after the very long day we´d had.
Woke up quite early and the first thing I had to do was take every piece of clothing I own (except for what I was wearing of course) to the laundry. You don´t realise that when you´re in humidity for so long in Montañita, that all of your clothes are constantly wet. It was so nice to get dry clean clothes back. Merlyn and I grabbed some breakfast before heading off to our separate hostels.
My hostel was Princesa Maria, which is a little walk up a hill but well worth it. It has internet, a kitchen, laundry and
I had a private room with a TV, clean bathroom and a lovely balcony with a stunning view over the town all for $6 per night!
Got a message from Merlyn soon after checking in asking if I wanted to go white water rafting with some people from her hostel. I jumped on it straight away but then started to feel a little but nervous about it after agreeing.
After about a 45 minute drive out of Baños, we reached our destination and had to put on our wetsuits, life jackets and helmets and were taught all of the commands and shown how to actually do it! Our team name was ´cayman´ and had to touch oars and shout ´cayman´ everytime something cool happened.
It was AMAZING! So much fun. Our guide was a little mischievious and kept pushing people out of the raft into the water but I begged him in Spanish not to push me and it seemed to work! Maybe my Spanish is improving. Or maybe I just looked petrified!
The river was a tributory to the Amazon river. Behind us were beautiful green hills and in front of us was the Amazon
Jungle. There were lots of vultures hanging around hoping for some rafters for tea, beautiful kingfishers and lots of other beatiful plants and animals. It was made even nicer by having the sun and the moon out at the same time. On the way back, we drove past the volcano which had smoke coming out of it. Must be pretty scary living so close to it.
Got back to my room and somehow managed to look myself OUT of my bathroom this time. Really don´t know how I do such stupid things. The guys in the hostel had to put a hole through my door to get it open. Fingers crossed I don´t lock myself in or out of anywhere else for the rest of trip!! Although there´s a 'pretty good chance with my balcony!
