Unbelievable but true I went to the white water rafting capital of Colombia. Ok San Gil is the only place in Colombia where you can go rafting but we won’t be picky will we. The other reason why I thought of stopping in San Gil was that it nicely breaks up the 20 hour bus ride to the coast. Didn’t expect much from the town but I liked it very much. It is not that big (30.000), very clean (which is surprising for a SA city) and feels very safe. Safe enough even to go for a run after dusk on a small dirt road outside of the city. Don’t worry there is enough police and military with big guns around. In fact I have never seen such a big police and Military to inhabitant’s ratio ... read more

I guess most of you like me haven’t heard much good news from Colombia in a long time. If you ever hear anything on TV then its mostly related to Cocaine, the Medellin or Cali cartel, Colombia being the kidnapping capital of the world or the US trying to make another place better by starting a war. Well all good enough reasons to check it out (just kidding). The reason why I’m here is a friend of mine brought Colombia up when I asked him where to go in South America. He seemed to be quite taken by this country. Other people that I’ve met had never anything bad to say about Colombia and I hope I won’t be the first one. If you read the Rio entry then you know that I’m capable of ... read more

Hola folks...Time for another essay... hope you´re being inspired for some future travels in this part of the world...can´t tell you enough how great it is!! Cartagena Absolutely stunning city, like a film set almost, horse drawn carriages, thick-set city walls, multi coloured buildings. Restoring a city like this makes it a tourist destination and here was the Hilton, the cruise ships and the American hordes. The city was the main Spanish port for exporting gold and was once held siege to by Francis Drake. The pock-marks of cannon balls still mark the walls today. There’s no escaping the history and sense of timelessness that’s steeped in this place. If anyone has read Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Love in the Time of Cholera, then the sense of magic evoked here is still in place today. Beautiful as ... read more

My friends Jonathan (English) and Maria-Paula (Colombian) got hitched in Bogota on 4th March 2006 and this was the cause for much celebration for all concerned, and a chance for me to meet up with friends and family. A welcome break in the solo travelling, and one of the most impressive weddings I have ever attended (great food, lovely service, lavish reception, free whisky etc). Colombia was in many ways as I expected, but there was still room to be surprised by the level of sophistication of this city (hell, the bars were better than London, and I had the finest restaurant burger that I have ever had). Colombia has a bad rep internationally, and there was much sucking of teeth and anguished expressions from friends when they learned I was travelling there. I knew, of ... read more

In Barranquilla mussten ... read more

COLOMBIA Hola folks! Bit late sending this one...sorry they´re all so long but it will give you a good time wasting opportunity at work to read it all!...those of you that sit and surf all day anyway..Willis and Wren, not thinking of you in particular! Crossed the border to Colombia this morning at 6/7am...remember to wind that watch back 1 hr! Was a bit worried about all the searches and drug planting tales I have heard and thought they might mistake my emergency tooth filler for crack but no need to worry...was not searched or stopped even once, only had to present docs at the official immigration places and that´s it! Got bus Ven/Unitransco from Maracaibo this morning. Was told you can only book a seat direct from Caracas so had to turn up at 4.00am ... read more

... read more

Hello everybody! My last entry was quite sad, as I was leaving Turkey, my friends there and an independent life-style I got very used to. I returned home and it didn't take long before I decided to leave again. I was missing a multi-cultural environment, travelling and meeting new, interesting people from all over the world. So the decision to take a second Aiesec traineeship came easy. The opportunities with @ are endless, so I didn't hesitate for one second. I had a few phone interviews with schools from Hong Kong, Venezuela, Canada and Colombia. Eventually I decided on Colombia, as it suited my purpose to brush up on my Spanish and to experience South America. So here I am, teaching English as a Second Language ( ESL) to a group of 28 kids aged 5 ... read more

Sorry for the hasteness of this posting. Even on an extensive holiday like this you can find laziness over the christmas holidays. In my last entry I was leaving the Pacific coast en route to Medellin. The 14 hour bus ride came and went with no problems and I found myself in the large bustling metropoolis of Medellin. Medellin is famous for a few things. Primarily it was the home of the large cartel of Pablo Escobar. Escobar was a drug Baron in the 80´s that ruled the city and much of Columbia. He was eventually gunned down by police agencies, but he apparantly killed thousands some say millions of people and displaced several thousand others. He did however sink a lot of money into Medellin making it a beautiful modern city that already sits ... read more
