We spent 3 days in Salento, a beautiful little town in the middle of the coffee region. It looked like the sterotypical Colombian town, complete with Juan Valdez look-a-likes wearing ponchos and cowboy hats riding horses down the streets. Unfortunately with Colombian stereotypes comes violence, and we saw our first example in this tiny, quiet town (not directed toward us). Our first night in town we went to the town square for a few drinks at the only place that was open with a group of people from the hostel. There was a drunk man sitting on the steps in front of the bar, and a man inside the bar starting whipping him in the face with a horse whip! The military police came and hauled off the guy who had been whipped. It was really ... read more

1/2/2010 I left popayan that night and made it to armenia at 2 in the am where I slept in the terminal before I could take a bus to salento at 5 30. Once in salento I missed the first jeeps to the valle to cocora and caught the second set at 9. Now I figured one jeep, 4 riders would be about right….try 11 put 2 in the front next to the driver, 6 in benched added to the back, 2 on the roof and another 3 hanging onto the back standing on the rear bumper. I was one of the last set, and the 40 min ride to follow was bumpy enough to warrant the 4 wheel drive. Just getting there was a workout. I walked the trail and it was absolutely amazing, the ... read more

Located in Colombia’s coffee region this little town of 2000 inhabitants is located amidst the lush green mountains this area is famous for. Our first day here we walked to a coffee farm where a tiny old man took us around and we picked, roasted, ground and drank our own coffee beans. God I love this country! The second day we hiked in a near-by national park. I know I describe everything as amazing and beautiful, but this place was truly stunning and perhaps the most beautiful place we’ve been so far. We arrived to the park early in the morning and the light cast by the early sun gave the place a calm, but inviting ambience. We walked though a deep grassy pasture through the valley and then began our ascent into the rain forest. ... read more

After a big night Chris and I slept in for a bit trying to get to coffee country today will be a tall task, we checked out and took the bus to Armenia, we wer surprised to find out it will take 6 hours to get there, Luis my friend said only 4 hours, liar! it was a small bus and our seat is next to the toilet and it stunk. The roads are windy and the kids in the bus are throwing up. Occasional wafts of smelly toilet and a/c that barely worked was too much for a 6 hour trip. We had a break halfway and had lunch, i had a delicious fried mojarra fish and guanabana juice, very filling and quite tasty. Arrived in Armenia on a dark rainy eve, we noticed horses ... read more

Hola! Well I have had a crazy week in Southern Colombia. On my way to Salento (a cute colonial style town famous for coffee, cowboys and trout) I sat beside a beautiful young Colombian girl who did not speak English, but when she found out that I was travelling by myself she decided to take me to meet her friends, two of who could speak perfect English. I spent the afternoon walking around the town which was packed with Sunday Colombian tourists and I had a new fruit juice - Guanabana, absolutely delicious with milk. The next day I did a tour of the coffee farm owned by the hostel I was staying at - the Plantation House. Colombian coffee is so renowned because they only grow Arabica beans (more flavour, less caffeine); apparently it would ... read more

Despite traveling to 3 different areas, I had yet to take a long-distance busride in Colombia. Well, that all changed when Adam and I started our journey into Colombian coffee country! Naturally, Adam and I were running late for the bus to Armenia that we had planned to take. As we jog into the terminal, we are greated by literally every single bus company shouting at us in the hopes that we would make our travels plans with their company. It was truly a crazy scene! The next 7 hours were spent going up, down, left and right through the mountains. As the crow flys, Armenia is not that far. Only problem is that the crow can fly directly over the mountain whereas our bus (unfortunately) cannot. After another bus from Armenia, Adam and I finally ... read more

Our journey in to the coffee region was a long one, but well worth the trip. We were on the overnight from Bogota, this time we had a blanket that Deb had bought to keep us warm and it definitely did the job. The bus went over a mountain range of the Andes so it was very much a slow paced bus. Up an then down, and the rising sun on the way down also brought the towns of the coffee region below in to view, in Armenia we caught the colectivo bus to Salento. Salento is a much smaller town than the other coffee towns of Armenia and Manizales so we decided on Salento. It is a nice attractive town, very small but set in lush green and there is a lookout at the top ... read more

Monday morning we headed off early to Bogota’s main bus station, through some different neighbourhoods which were more suburban and more familiar to us. Very unlike the dusty chaos of the central area near where we were staying. Our bus journey started at 9am and lasted almost 8 hours, with only a 20 min break for lunch. It was exhausting to say the least, although Amy seemed to cope really well with it. Once we got out of Bogota, the landscape was beautiful, through the mountainous Andes, through plains and over rivers. At times it was a bit terrifying (for Fee anyway) looking over the shear drops from the side of the road. We changed at Armenia, straight on the next bus to Salento, only a short 50 min hop away. Salento is a pretty, rustic ... read more
