After saying goodbye to Christian in San Agustin there didn't seem like any reason to stay any longer, so the following morning we headed off to our next destination. After walking into town with all our bags we decided to take a car to the crossroads out of town to catch the bus heading to Popayan, by doing this we would save ourselves a bit of money. After making it to the crossroads we saw our bus heading into San Agustin to pick up other passengers before stopping for us....the bus was already full so we hoped that most of those people would be getting off and we would actually get a seat. Once the bus arrived Sharyn got on the bus to secure some seats for us but was only able to get one because ... read more

On the road to Popayan a sign on the gate of a huge fiels read “prohibido cazar armadillos” … translated “hunting armadillos not allowed”! Have yet to see a live armadillo …saw that dead one in Leon that cost less than a pound of red beans and did not go to the Zoo in Cali… An armadillo was not seen there either. The highway into Popoyan took the bus down a steep grade. Cows were in evidence all along the way. The country side looked neat and verdant. The streets of the city are clean. In this town the street cleaners, men and women, wear yellow. One woman was seen straddling the back of a motorcycle facing backwards and holding on to her pail on wheels. The motorcycle pulled into the curb. She got off ... read more

Just crossed the border by foot! Left Ecuador, stood waiting for my Colombian visa, handed over my passport, dude looks at it for a while and then asks me if Im from Nothern Ireland or Southern Ireland! I wasnt really expecting this so was a little flustered in my response, but realising the reason, I tell him that although I was born in Belfast, its a passport from the Republic. He then, picks up the phone then buggers off for 10 mins with my passport. If you are not aware, Irelands profile or more exactly N.Irelands profile has been front page news in Columbia over the last number of years due to 3 alleged ecotourists/IRA guys being arrested for training FARC rebels. They were banged up for 2-3 years on trial, then jumped bail! Irish had ... read more

We had another crazy, 6 and a half hour bus ride to Popayan, through gorges, steep hills, winding road and bush, very nice scenery. The bus driver appeared to need to pass on blind corners as fast as he could, tooting to tell everyone else to get off the road. Once again lots of check points, with the soldiers with automatic FN´s, with huge magazines sticking out of them. Popayan is known as the White City, because most of the city centre is painted white. It looks very pretty. We booked into a flash hotel that was supposed to be cheap and the room turned out to be a dungeon, with no window and the walls 2 feet thick and no air so that we nearly suffocated. We had to find another place the next day ... read more

After our lovely time in Popyan and Colombia in general we were off to Ecuador. Colombia was a very nice surprise and summed up what is great about traveling, you cannot have too many preconceived ideas of what a place is like until you have explored and experienced it yourself. Our first stop in Ecuador was Ibarra and we wanted to come here to sample the famous ice cream which we have read about. To get here we had to get 4 buses and a taxi so not the easiest way of getting from one place to the next. No major hiccups apart from the hour wait at Ecuador’s immigration as the computers were on the blink and at one point after re booting for the 100th time the guy said one more time and if ... read more

After Tunja was a nightmare trip and one I would like to forget. First we had to queue for 4 hours to get the bus back to Bogotá as it seems the whole of Tunja was trying to do the same. It was like being back at Alton Towers queues snaking around for hours with no site of the end of the line, the only difference was there was no great ride to look forward to at the end! We finally get on the bus which took another 4 hours got dumped on the side of the motorway as the driver couldn’t be bothered going to the bus terminal, an hours walk down the motorway to the bus terminal, just arrived in time to get on another bus for 11 hours to Popayan arriving at 7 ... read more
