Teil 3 - Popayán So langsam reichts mir hier in Cali.

I've uh, been a bit remiss about writing lately.Part of the problem is this location. It was serene and beautiful with access to one of the best town in Colombia to view "indigenous" culture. Unfortunately there wasn't much else to do there besides ogle at locals and look at buildings. And even this culture hound architect can only do so much of that.I guess I should have been happy to get a restful respite after Cali Colombia tried to wear holes in my dancing shoes, but well, ya'll know that just ain't me. As it stands, after a half a day of wandering Popayan taking pretty pictures, I was pretty much sure that everything looked the exact same. When they said it was the "White City" they wasn't kidding. Since everything looked the same I (you ... read more

16th - 30th May: After flying back to Quito from the Galapagos Islands we had a few days in Quito and thankfully the sun came out for half of one of those, but the muggings didn´t stop. The sun finally appeared on the Sunday morning and we got to see the Old Town in all its glory as the streets are closed to cars on Sundays. As for the muggings, well the chef (a Quito local) in the Secret Garden got stabbed on the Friday night. Don´t think we´ll be going back to Quito in a hurry. We hit the road for the Colombian border on the Tuesday morning and stopped in a town called Pasto, in southern Colombia, on Tuesday night just to break the journey. Next morning we moved on to Popayan, a beautiful ... read more

From the US State Department web site travel warning on Colombia (Feb 2008) "U.S. government officials and their families in Colombia are permitted to travel to major cities in the country, but normally only by air. They cannot use inter- or intra-city bus transportation, or travel by road outside of urban areas at night. All Americans in Colombia are urged to follow these precautions." So, of course, I had to do part of my trip by road. Tony and I hired this great taxi driver named George to take us from Cali to Popayan, a little colonial town about two hours or so from Cali. Turns out, Colombia seems to have its major highways under control. Every 20 miles or so, we passed random highway patrol pullovers. George informed us this was to check papers, licenses, ... read more

As I still had not met Daniela (we had some problems communicating with each other, as my cell phone with the Movistar chip from Ecuador does not work here, and as she was in Tierradentro where there is no internet) and was still hanging around in Popayan, I decided to go to an Andean music concert at the Colliseo in Popayán. Not that I am particularly in favour of Andean music (actually wçquite sick of the bands in our Pedestrain zones at home playing El Condor Pasa), but it seemed like the appropriate thing to do in an Andean country for once, and nothing else had come up anyway. The concert was supposed to start at 7 p.m., so for once I was in time at 5 to 7. When I entered the big hall, there ... read more

The journey from Pasto to Popayán led through beautiful landscape quite distinct from the regions I have seen so far in Ecuador. At times I felt like in Africa: the bus was filled almost entirely with black people (descendants from slaves brought to Colombia centuries ago), black people were walking in the fields and sitting outside the houses along the highway, and skinny white cattle were searching the dry steppes for something to eat. As we descended further towards Popayán the landscape turned greener and towards the evening was illuminated in fluorescent green and yellow, with a rainbow above it, very beuatiful. Popayán is a beautiful colonial city, with stunning chalk-white facades all over, and thus also called 'Ciudad Blanca'. It´s very clean and relaxed, with students everywhere and extremely friendly people. There are cafés everywhere ... read more
