Cartagena - Medellin

We arrived in Medellin a few days ago after taking the 14 hour bus ride from Cartagena. The city is nice but, due to the time of year, it pretty much rains every afternoon and evening. We haven't really let the weather limit us but the majority of our pictures look gloomy. We have been staying at the Black Sheep hostel which has been great - it is an older crowd, very clean and friendly English-speaking staff. We take the metro everywhere which is super cheap and allows us to get around the city quickly. We've managed to see quite a bit during our time here including an art museum, the botanical gardens (not much to see but it's free), the city center and Pablo Escobar's grave. We took the cable car up over the slums of the city which was interesting to see - it is crazy how just a few steps takes you from nice areas of affluence to extreme poverty. We also went paragliding which was a lot of fun. We had to take a 45 minute bus to San Felix but it was well worth it - the views were incredible and running myself off a cliff

Pablo Escobar's grave.
wasn't as terrifying as I thought it would be. (I was happy that a guy from our hostel waited until after we made the jump to tell me that a very experienced Colombian para-glider died 2 weeks ago doing the same thing).

Tomorrow we are off to Quito, Ecuador via airplane. We decided that the approximate 36 hour bus ride with 3 transfers and a border crossing just doesn't sound like fun so we looked into booking a flight and found a sweet deal through Expedia. We got our flights (Medellin-Bogota-Quito) for $142US/person taxes included (round trip). When we looked into one-way flights the price was over $300/person so we booked the cheap ones and will just ditch the return flight as we will be moving further south and not returning to Colombia. Overall we are saving ourselves a lot of time (and headache) without having to pay too much more.
