I’d read about The Lost City Trek (Ciudad Perdida in Spanish) in the travel section of the paper a couple of years ago and put it on the to do list after that. Since then a couple of friends have done it and highly recommended it. We’ve done lots of day hikes since we’ve been away and have a lot of miles in our legs but we’ve not yet done any hikes that involve camping or walking consecutive days. The last two weeks probably haven’t been the best preparation we could have had but the walk will hopefully serve as the perfect detox! The Lost City is an archaeological site of an ancient city that was discovered in 1972 by a group of looters looking for treasure. It is in Colombia’s Sierra Navada and is believed ... read more

Minca (14/04/2018-16/04/2018) As we fare goodbye to our fantastic hostel in Santa Marta and its wonderful jugo (juice), we hail a taxi to take us to get a shuttle bus to our next destination Minca - a refreshing town nestled in the mountains, renowned for its natural beauty. Minca is the perfect place to kick back and relax for a few days, take in some great scenic walks, spot tropical birds, and enjoy interacting with some locals. After a 15 minute drive, our taxi driver stops and checks for the bus shuttle.. he returns with bad news, and mumbles something in Spanish to inform us the shuttle bus isn't until tomorrow. How odd... the hostel never mentioned anything.. something doesn't feel right, but we were stuck! So he ended up personally driving us to Minca (45 ... read more

The second day, I decided to work all the day. I was working in the room until 4:00 p.m. when my husband arrived at the hotel. We decided to go to the beach because the hour is perfect for a walk. First, we went toTaganga and then the Rodadero beach because we didn´t have much time to visit the beaches and enjoy the landscapes. In the road to Taganga we stopped in a mountain to watch the sunset and take pictures. After 10 minutes, we arrived toTaganga and got a parking.I was very happy because I remembered when I was younger and I had been there. We walked along the beach. and enjoy a delicious ice cream. Taganga is known as a fishing village, today it is a very touristic place. Also Taganga is famous for its sunset, its diving ... read more

We arrived in the evening and stayed in a hotel near to the beach and the “parque de los novios”. The “ Hostal Parque Real “ was comfortable, very nice and quiet. Our first visit was to the park “parque de los novios”, there were many people because in the city was celebrating the Tairona India Festival. We walked through the park and saw many bars and restaurants, then we got to the beach. I was on this beach 28 years ago. Nowadays there are many monuments in honor of the Tairona Indians, we choose a place to have a few beers and appreciate the atmosphere at night. Then, before that we went to sleep we ate at a good restaurant. It was delicious.... read more

My family and I went to the stone river two years ago. We had a lot of fun that weekend, although the river was growing we could bathe. The stone river has many fascinating things; the first thing that amazed me was his giant whites stones. There were very large stones in the middle of the river. I walked on the stones contemplating the waters of the river, Its waters were so crystal clear that you could see the fish. The second thing that amazed me was the rapidity with which the river grows. After we bathed the waters increased their level. It was not possible to enter the river because it was dangerous but at least this does not happen in the summer. In spite of this, I think it is a good tourist site. ... read more

My husband had been working in Santa Marta on weekends. Last holiday, I decided to travel with him. I had not been in Santa Marta in many years. Actually, I have always wanted to travel, but I had never considered other places. I have been traveling to Bucaramanga frequently on Christmas holiday to visit my family. The first day of our travel, we expected to travel early in the morning, but we have a problem with the gas filter of the car. Then our trip began after noon. Our first stop was in Ciénaga Magdalena. On my first visit to Ciénaga, the architecture and its people caught my attention. After the trip, I discovered its history, the folklore and I learned that Ciénaga is one of the heritage towns of Colombia. Ciénaga is the second town ... read more

Before departing for the La Ciudad Perdida, we decided to make a stop in a small backpacker town in the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta. So, after the 4-hour bus ride from Cartagena to Santa Marta, we hopped in a small cab and headed up into the mountains. I had come across Minca while researching what to do while in Colombia but it didn’t make the itinerary until everyone I met who had been there raved about it. The town itself doesn’t really have much to offer, other than the hostels scattered throughout the surrounding jungle. Once we finally arrived in Minca proper, I told our cab driver the name of our hostel and told him to drop us off there. He motioned for me to get out and directed me to a group of guys ... read more

My last blog ended on a Sunday night in the delightful port of Santa Marta, meeting up with our friends Laurie and Carole for drink at sunset in Santa Marta’s one good beach bar. As we celebrated being on holiday with a nice cool beer our thoughts turned to the next five days ahead. When originally planning our trip, Ian and I had discounted the five day trek to the Lost City (La Ciudad Perdida) but then our good friend Nicola mentioned it and how the rest of them were going to take the five day hike. I do enjoy a good walk on occasion and after hearing discussions about the hike, I suffered from what I believe the yoof of today call FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and insisted we went along with the rest. ... read more

We stepped off the plane and bang...we were smacked in the face with booming sun and 33 degrees of humid heat. Back in the heat, back to the beach and back in the land of the mozzies. We had arrived in Santa Marta and were quickly on our way to our hostel where we were greeted by our local hostel owner...Alan from Peckham! Not long after arriving, our minds had already switched to planning for the following day; a hike and over night stay in the Tayrona National Park. Famed for its beautiful Caribbean beaches, huge boulders and spectacular hiking trails through the nearby forested hills, we were certainly looking forward to getting there and chilling out (not so much the hiking though). The following morning we were up and out the door by 8am, waiting ... read more
