A relatively short flight took us to Santa Marta, the first Spanish settlement in Columbia and the second oldest in South America, where we were met by our guide for the hour plus drive to our next stop, a lodge just outside Tayrona National Park. Colombia has some 59 national parks, which makes up about 14%! of the total area in this diverse country, which is impressive. Of course, you are going ... Read Full Entry

Cartagena and the Jungle
Ah, your blog brings back many memories of my own visit to the area for my very first Travel Blog journey 12 years ago. Beautiful places. Cartagena is a wonderful city, rich in colour and culture. I remember those Tayrona hiking trails. I can only wonder at how the first arrivals in this great continent must have felt when seeing the jungle and mountains spreading out before them. The swimming pool must have felt like paradise after the hike in the heat and humidity. And I imagine you must also have been in seafood heaven amongst the markets and restaurants of Cartagena. Beautiful part of the world, and great blog 😊

Cartagena and the Jungle
I'm glad we brought back some memories for you. The trails were muddy from the rain so I didn't love it. Indeed the seafood was good and welcome. It was a nice trip.

Lots of experiences!
Wow, what a variety of experiences within only a few days - hiking in the muddy jungle, dancing, cooking, walking the streets of the city...

National Park Insurance?
Never heard of that before, but sounds like a near necessity given ambulances etc...

National Park Insurance?
The paths were uneven with many trip hazards. The day we were hiking the path was a mess due to the rains the few days before. I feel certain there are many injuries each year. It was reassuring to have the ambulances just in case... however, no telling where they take you.

Amazing Diversity
This is what is so great about Colombia. This is so different than your other entries in Colombia. So much variety, including the weather. We avoided hiking in Tayrona because of the heat and humidity and only saw it from the water. Well done making it as far as you did!

Amazing Diversity
Tayrona was a tough hike for us and we usually don't mind humidity. There is a wide variety of things to do in Colombia. Cartagena and Tayrona offered more touristy things which has pluses and minuses. Thank you for commenting.

Embracing it all
I love that you took a dance class! The architecture and food looks so lovely, and the market tour with Charles seemed like a winner - I'll have to remember him if we find ourselves in Colombia in the near future :)

Embracing it all
We had fun in dance class. The architecture is lovely and Charles was a delight. All in all an exceptional time.

Cartagena
Another great location to spend a couple of days exploring. You guys are in great shape for hiking and dancing in what sounds like quite horrible humid conditions

Cartagena
Alan, it was hot and humid. I'm not sure how good of shape we are in but we were still able to dance and enjoy!
