My friends Jonathan (English) and Maria-Paula (Colombian) got hitched in Bogota on 4th March 2006 and this was the cause for much celebration for all concerned, and a chance for me to meet up with friends and family. A welcome break in the solo travelling, and one of the most impressive weddings I have ever attended (great food, lovely service, lavish reception, free whisky etc). Colombia was in many ways as I expected, but there was still room to be surprised by the level of sophistication of this city (hell, the bars were better than London, and I had the finest restaurant burger that I have ever had). Colombia has a bad rep internationally, and there was much sucking of teeth and anguished expressions from friends when they learned I was travelling there. I knew, of ... read more

Faz-me sentir bem.

Colombia. Colombia is a terrific country. The people are open, the food is great, the music gets you in the hips. It is just that we had to cross there very quickly to get to Ecuador in time for new year. If you want, you can cross this vast magical country (let´s but aside the dubious politics for a moment) on a bus in three days. Not recommeded. We did not, therefore, get a chance to see or do much. But we did spend the night in Bucaramanga in a hotel, highly rated by the Lonely Planet, which had holes in the door, and a few cockroaches. This is also the city where you can buy fried ants in chocolate. I´ not sure if anyone eats them anymore, or if the industry survives purely on tourists ... read more

THERe IS after all a direct bus to Bogota from Villa De Levya. Its huge although sans real air conditioning. We took it back for about $10.... Even though we got stopped and had our passports taken at a checkpoint (they gave them back) it was a really nice ride. Elizabeth and I got food to take on the bus. With our bad spanish, we got a corn cake, homemade sausages and little potatoes in a brown paper bag for $2.50US. Liz made a face at the guy for the high price and he gave her an extra corn cake. it was okay except for the serious lack of salsa. Okay, we spent our last hours (we literally had saturday evening and sunday morning left in bogota) hanging with Elizabeth´s friend Daniel and friends. We went ... read more

WOW! Thanks, ali, for the advice about the @ symbol! i don´t know how i would ever get that. I wish i had more time here, Its really not enough to spend only a week in a country, I barely scratched the surface. Yesterday, we met some guys on the plane on their way to peru, that were travelling for over a year. They made it through on $20 a day. Anyway, forgot where i left off in colombia, and i´m actually in argentina right now! backtracking... We ended up going to Villa De Levya about 3 hours (or supposedly 3 hours) from Bogota. Its a small preserved town, complete with gauchos and hard bargaining local artisans. We scoffed at the $120 a driver at the hotel wanted to charge us for a ride there and ... read more

WOAAA!! Its not registering that i don´t have to go into work on monday. Oh....but i think it will hit me soon. I relax very easily. especially since on saturday, i´m getting aN HOUR message for only $20. OK. if i could figure out 3 things, travelling would be simplere 1. how to you get teh (at) symbol on these computers. 2. How do you not have a heart attack everytime you get in a car (already got into a fender bender...no worries though. the driver we hit just gave us a look and kept going). 3. how do you say you´re cute, can i take your picture, and then can you take me dancing. i know how to say the first part: se puesto tener uno photo y..... Zipaquira 50ks from Bogota, we thought we´d come here first and check out the "magnificent" salt cathedral ($0.50cents) before Bogota. It would be good, if it wasn´t for the money making business around it. The cathedral is completely underground, you descend 180 metres into the salt chapels. It is quite dark, but happily not that cold. As you do the walk of the 15 crosses (still not sure if that´s the correct number), you forget that the marble around you is actually not marble but salt. And common table salt at that. I never knew it could be so strong. Next time anyone is bored at a dinner table, try making a little cathedral from the contents of your salt shaker. I will be impressed. Zipaquira is not pretty or interesting. We stayed in a hotel ... read more

It´s not that bad. I don´t know what all the fuss is about. Yes, 7 million people, and yes, a little pollution but no worse than any other SA city and it certainly doesn´t feel over-crowded, well nothing does compared to London. It´s 2,600m high but it felt like sea level to me, being the pro that I am. Snowdonia, let me laugh in its face. In Bogota, transport is craked with busetas going everywhere and the Transmilenio (electrically driven bus) going north and south. It´s easy and nice´n cheap too. Jason, got pick-pocketed on it though, so watch out when it gets crowded. And don´t be silly and try and attempt it with your huge rucksack on. The taxi driver friend who we had met in our hostel in Merida, picked us up at the ... read more

Looking at the beginning of my last entry, I think I was myself being a little over-sensational about what goes on in Colombia. Probably just playing up to the ususal stereotypical fears of the ignorant public at large, in order to hype-up the story. And I apologise to all Colombians for doing so. This country is truly something else, the level of warmth of the people I have only ever encountered once before - in India. Almost everywhere you go, the people are helpful, friendly, curious, charming and truly alive. In stark contrast to it's neighbour, Venezuela -which is still for me the biggest dissapointment of my trip thus far. Oh yes, I can hand on heart state that the most beautiful women in the world are Colombian and certainly NOT the Venezuelans - having ... read more
