Over the years we’ve seen our fair share of cities, some have been good and some have not. Bogota is one of the good ones. It’s not without its drawbacks, the world famous drizzle being one, but what it loses in climatic charm it more than makes up for in culture. I’d be lying too if I said security wasn’t an issue, it is. The first weekend of World Cup football resulted in 9 fatalities and several disturbances across the city and reports of thefts and muggings aren’t uncommon. However, the mayor seems to have a pretty good grip on things and isn’t afraid to use his political muscle. In the near three weeks we have been here the Mayor has called for two dry days (‘Le Seca’) meaning that no alcohol can be sold or ... read more

Our Arrival We arrived into Bogota International Airport from Orlando Florida at 10pm. At immigration we were asked our occupations and address we were staying in Bogota. 90 days was stamped in our passport. (Note - to board the plane in the USA we were asked for proof of our return flight from Colombia). After immigration is the baggage claim and there was a casa de cambio where you could change money but no ATM's. Next is customs and again we were asked for our address in Bogota. Once through customs we were met by unofficial taxi drivers. We needed an ATM so went upstairs to departures where there were 4 ATM's in a row. Once we had some peso's we went back down to arrivals. We ignored the touts and went outside and lined up ... read more

Nous ... read more

Geo: 4.60987, -74.082In Latin America, it would seem that every city & town has at least one central square/plaza, and there is at least one church overlooking all of those squares. These houses of worship certainly don't rival the great churches of Europe and after weeks of travel in South America, there was a 'sameness' to them that saw us zipping through a number of them. It was somewhat surprising then that the primary reason we were visiting Bogota was to see yet another church. Granted, DH has had something of a colorful past that may require many more church visits to completely cleanse (her mud massage with the two dudes in Cartegna probably requires a dedicated confessional visit and a few "Hail Marys" all on its own!!), but the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá near Bogota ... read more

When you hear the word Colombia, what are the first things that spring to mind?!...Cocaine, drug lords (namely Mr Escobar), crime and general lawlessness?! From what we had heard from hoards of other travellers, the aforementioned are all a thing of the past, with the new Colombia offering vibrant cities, stunning beaches, beautiful countryside and the friendliest of people. It was now time to find out for ourselves. We arrived at Bogota's clean and modern international airport early in the afternoon, hopped in a taxi and made our way to our hostel. Having shared the taxi with an English couple we had just met at the airport, the taxi dropped them off first at the city centre area of La Candelaria. The area is still pretty notorious for crime, especially at night. Despite this, it still ... read more

Thursday 20th February (Odyssey Day 104) Since the drive today was long, we left camp at 0700. So we got to see the dawn this morning, even if the sunrise itself was out of sight behind the clouds. I had the front seat today, which means I fell asleep along the front bench as soon as we got out of town. I hadn’t even realised I was tired! We stopped and started quite a lot as there seemed to be a lot of areas of roadwork along the way. But at least the road is a properly paved one. Looking out the windows you can quite often see a military presence just off the road but we were not stopped at all. We arrived into Bogota after dark this evening. From what we could see driving ... read more

Again we woke early to the sound of the street hawkers as today is the Three Kings Day and a public holiday here and therefore another opportunity for these people to try to sell their wares. The man directly below us has a guitar, binoculars, some toys and some electrical goods spread on his tarp. Flo called the Boliviariana bus company for us to arrange a ticket to Cali for the first bus tomorrow morning. It is scheduled to depart at 6:30 am and takes between 8 and 9 hours. We asked to make a reservation and pay for it with a credit card now and collect the ticket tomorrow morning. That was not allowed. We could make the reservation now but we had to come to the bus station to pay for the ticket today, ... read more
