I have been wanting to write a small ”in general” update here from Valparaíso since all the experiences happen non stop and I will not be making updates per day like on my usual travels. I’m so in love with this city! Every time I leave the house I see something new and exciting, graffiti, new cool houses, and interesting people etc., there is never a boring day in this city.
We’ve been lucky enough to find a house in Cerro Carcel just next to Plaza Bismarc, which according to Lonely Planet is a must see spot because of the amazing view. We can see all of the coast and the sea and during nighttime we can see all of the beautiful lights that glow up. It is one of the most colorful neighbourhoods and placed right next to Cerro Alegre which is also full of graffiti and colours and cute little cafes.
The harbor is so charming with the beautiful Plaza Sotomayor in the background. From the plane you can see all of the cerros that helps make this city one of the most unique cities in the world. If you walk further along the coast you will
at some point see the sea lions bashing in the sun and you can easily catch a sunset here many times and never be bored. Every Wednesday and Saturday the fruit and vegetable market, or the feria, opens and you can buy fresh, delicious greens for no money.
The night life is one of the big plusses too, every day you can find a party and its never boring. You can find any kind of party and all sorts of bars, pubs and clubs.
Places I can recommend to visit is Pablo Nerudas house “La Sebastiana”, the home of one of the most famous poets, a house with amazing views over the city and the story of a man who lived his life enjoying every day, which is also visible in the decoration of the house.
Also, it is important to explore the cerros, especially Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción! These cerros have the most beautiful views, colorful house and amazing street art that I have seen in my entire life. Catch a tram up the side of the cerro to get a good view - enjoy and get lost!
On top of all of this
it has the beach which is really necessary in the summer heat - you have a bit north of there Con Con with sand dunes to sandboard in and Viña del Mar which is a bit more similar to Europe if you have to much of the more latin vibes in Valparaíso.
In general the people you meet here are open, warm and super helpful. I never really felt unsafe. It is a hard place for learning Spanish since they have their own words for many things, do not pronounce things very clearly and just in general speak super fast. However it is so rich in everything else - I would never change city if I could go back and do it all over again! Plus it is full of animals everywhere. You will see some really sad cases - I have never seen that many street dogs anywhere else before. I luckily had the chance to help out at a dog shelter and help out some of the poor little ones, but the locals in general do a lot as well! They set up boxes for them in winter and help feeidng them.
