Santiago came as a bit of a shock. Anything that you want is on tap, the youngsters wear funky clothes and hang out in roadside cafés slurping beers, the food is good, the wine is great and the parties don´t stop until dawn. We can certainly testify to the latter - our hotel was located in Bella Vista, which is rammed full of bars and clubs. The music didn´t stop until after 6 am. However, that was no problem for SuperSnoozeSuse and her earplugged sidekick. As it was Doug´s last night we felt like we ought to get in on the action. It was no problem finding a suitable location for a few swift ones and we soon had glasses of Pisco Sour in our hands. This is the national drink of Chile. It consists of ... read more

At the border between Tacna and Arica, we drove the couple of kilometres to the Chilean border post. There, we had our bags searched again, just as at the Peruvian side, but this time they had x-ray machines and this was a sign of what was to come: Chile is very much more advanced and wealthy than Peru. We had to put our clocks forward by two hours! I’ve never had to do that at a land border before. I got to Arica and was in the situation of getting used to another country and another currency again. I intitially thought the exchange rate was twice what it was so was shocked to find Chile so expensive. Turns out it was only half as expensive. It’s still cheaper than the UK, but very much dearer than ... read more

So we left La Serena and had our farewell lunch at a beach on the way to Santiago. The best lunch ever - cheese, biscuits and wine! :-) Some of us drank more wine than others and Helen managed to convince Alex that she should write to her very sexy lodger in Sydney - Lucas. The following is an insert of what I can remember Alex wrote to Lucas "Hello, I am 32 but act 26. I am 5ft tall with everything in the right places - well at the moment! . I am an outdoorsy kind of girl, I spent the winter doing a ski season and I´ve recently discovered cycling. Anyway I can´t remember the rest as we were all crying with laughter!...I may upload this onto an internet dating site.... Our first night ... read more

Hey I can´t believe that this is the last blog i am writing in South America it feels as if i have been in this part of the world for a long time! We have been in Santiago, Chile, which if im honest is a bit pants! Just a big city with fairly unfriendly people and lots of smog!!! Ok well i may be being a bit harsh but you can gather that it doesn´t make my favourites list! We stayed in an ok hostel, i have been spoilt so far staying in more hotel like places. The good thing about the place was that they had a cleankitchen so for thefirst time in ages i was able to cook my ownfood and have proper toast- was lovely. Yesterday we went to a port town, Valparasio ... read more

15.10.05 (yesterday) We went for a walk around the city. We went to the Central Mercardo which is a traditional chilean market selling food, mainly sea food which is sent to UK too. Today we went to Cerra Santa Lucia, this is a historic part of the city. It boasts gardens, fountains and a castle. We had been told not to go early in the morning, in the afternoon or at night as it can be dangerous. So we got there at about 11am, nice and safe! It was very pretty. At the top of the hill (as it´s on a hill) you get a nice view of the city with the Andes in the background. The mountains aren´t really clear as there is always a smog over the city, nice! Over the road we went ... read more

Yesterday we had our bus journey to Santiago, Chile. We were able to see the most spectacular scenery as we drove round and through the Andes. At the border, which was quite scarey in the middle of the mountains. We declared that we had fruit (apples) and they took our lush, huge apples of us!!!!!!3 of them! We were not happy!!!! Luckily we had eaten our sandwiches 5 mins before, cos they would have had them aswell! On the other side of the border you start your decent down the mountains. This involved the windiest, smallest roads on a coach ever! On one side there were mountains, on the other were sheer drops! Our mums would have hated it! Arrived in Chile, managed to get in a hostel, it´s an old mansion type building called Casa ... read more

South America, continent number four and the final destination before we fly home next month. We arrived in Santiago with a new found enthusiasm which had been missing since Asia. During our months spent in 'home from home' Australia and New Zealand we found that we had lost some of that feeling of adventure, but our time in Easter Island started to awakend those lost feelings and upon landing in Santiago our enthusiasm had reached new hights. It's all about making these last few weeks really memorable and going home on a high. After a good nights rest, our first priority was to book our bus ticket to our next stop, 'La Serana'. This was slightly more difficult than we had antisipated due to a national holiday for the 'Independance day' celebrations, which were going on ... read more
