It's actually been a sort of vacation this last week or so. You know the lie back and do nothing variety. We spent 3 nights in Valdivia with our daily itinerary revolving around sleeping, wandering arond town, though always ending up at the fish market to watch the sea lions, then after lunch somewhere we'd wander back to our hostel and spend the afternoon reading and watching cable TV. The highlight of the three days was when Christie stumbled upon a seven episode marathon of Arrested Development. Man were we in heaven. Our last day in Valdivia coincided with the Presidential Elections, and I spent the night recovering from my misery over Pinera's loss to Bachelat whils the rest of Valdivia drove around and around in their cars and pick ups honking their horns and shouting ... read more

We arrived in Santiago at about 8pm on the 30th December. We went to the hostel that we had previously stayed at expecting it to be getting full ready for the new year celebrations in the capital. However when we got to the hostel we found quite the oppoiste, it was much quieter than when we had previously stayed here. Speaking to people it sounds like many travellers in this part of the world at new year head to either Valparaiso or Buenos Aires. The day of new years eve we set out sight seeing, however the heat got to us and we were rather stupidly trying to get into museums at siesta time. So we gave up and decided to siesta ourselves and recharge our batteries for the evenings celebrations. The New Year celebrations began ... read more

We flew from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires on Christmas Eve, covering a distance of something ridiculous like 3000km and a 30 degree temperature increase. Having never had Christmas in the southern hemisphere before (or even anywhere other than my parent´s house in my case... how old am I??) it was very strange to be wearing shorts and t-shirts. We were treated to an interesting firework display at midnight. Argentinians firing fireworks out of adjacent windows in blocks of flats at other flats, cars, people, our hostel, anything available really! Added a certain edge to sitting on the hostels rooftop terrace anyway. Christmas dinner was predictably steak and red wine, at about 11pm when the temperatures had dropped a little. So really the only familiar thing about it was that we did very little. Buenos Aires is ... read more

We flew to Santiago on 27th of December which just happens to be Sami´s birthday. Since we flew over the date line it was one very long day, a total of 40 hours to be exact. We arrived to Santiago earlier than we had left Auckland so if that doesn´t mess up your head then what does! Maybe for this reason this was the first flight after which we had some degree of jetlag and we slept most of the following days. We stayed in La Casa Roja, a very cozy hostel in Santiago, and met some travellers with whom we spent the New Years Eve camping in Cajon del Maipo. We sat by the bonfire, made some really good food and had lots of fun with people all around the world. We were surprised about ... read more

We are in Santiago waiting for the celebrations to begin. They are just closing off the roads and a big sound system is being erected so should be a good night. We are having a meal with all the guys at the hostel at 9pm and then we are going out to the street party and fireworks display later on. We have lost our mobile phone charger and the battery is flat so sorry we cant send or receive any messages. So a few quick personals: Mr pallet have an excellent 30th birthday you old git! Dad Kelly happy 60th birthday you even older git! Sorry we cant be there. I hope everyone has a great night, we will be thinking of you all. Love and best wishes for the new year, Sue & Andy XXXX ... read more

…..well, we say road, it´s a very long way from Seattle until Santiago so we flew, again via Dallas. We arrived at ten am after 24 hours travelling, so got our heads down straight away. Santiago is Chile´s capital and houses a large percentage of Chile´s population. It is surrounded by the Andes and sits at 500 feet above sea level (thanks MD), whichs seems to keep in all the poor quality air. In the winter when the air is heavier there are major issues with air quality, causing a great deal of illness. We have not been here long enough to know if this is just a hazard of the city, or whether something is to be done. We awoke at midday in 30 degree heat (thanks MD), thirty hours earler we awoke to ten ... read more

After sadly saying goodbye to Argentina, and travelling back to Chile via The Snail again, we had a couple of days back in Santiago just before Christmas. Despite the huge Christmas trees everywhere and the hoards of people doing their last minute shopping, it just doesn't feel the same when you're in your shorts! We met an English guy called Gordon at our hostel who was on the last couple of days of his trip. Whilst sharing a particularly good bottle of Chilean red wine, he told us about Cafe Con Piedras - Coffee With Legs. It's a Chilean tradition. There are coffee houses all over the Capital, with coffee being served by ladies in very short shirts, with their legs on show! People (well men), from all over South America come here to go to ... read more

Okay, we have been hearing guys shouting out Puta (or a word that sounds like it) as we walk past, so naturally assumed it was perhaps a flattering comment... so curiosity led us to finding out what it meant. The definition of puta in Cuban spanish is prostitute!!! If anyone can enlighten us to the Chilean definition it would be gratefully appreciated!... answers on a postcard. Anyway, after being relieved that we got into Chile in the first place, we were a little bit stressed when it came to booking our bus ticket to Argentina that we may not actually be able to get out of Chile! Discovering that we needed our tourist cards to exit Chile, we had a faint memory of a supposed official taking them when we first arrived (come on girls, get ... read more

'Chile'. What pops into your mind first? Some people may think of wine, others of hot peppers, and yet others of that cold feeling under snowy skies. It's a word and country that can certainly conjur up a lot of images. For me I will always think of my first week in South America, the most modern hostel I have ever visited, and life in the driest desert in the world. And good wine. My plane arched over Santiago's surrounding feature, the Andes Mountains. As soon as I was heading in the bus towards Santiago, the view of the mountains was lost in smog. I followed up a recomended hostel from the tourist office, which can sometimes be a mistake on it's own as why on earth would they ever opt to stay in a place ... read more
