Puta - What does it mean???

Okay, we have been hearing guys shouting out Puta (or a word that sounds like it) as we walk past, so naturally assumed it was perhaps a flattering comment... so curiosity led us to finding out what it meant. The definition of puta in Cuban spanish is prostitute!!! If anyone can enlighten us to the Chilean definition it would be gratefully appreciated!... answers on a postcard.
