Well, folks, we thought that Punta Arenas was the end of the world with it´s freezing temperatures, hurricane force winds and high prices on everything except alcohol (we heard... not from personal experience, of course), but we were treated to an expedition to work on a sheep farm on the island of Tierra del Fuego (The ¨Land of Fire¨) for the last few days and it made Punta Arenas look like New York City. The Magallenas region of Chilean Patagonia historically owes its prosperity to two industries; Shipping and sheep farming. The cold temperatures and high winds year round mean that not much will grow in the volcanic soil of the region except scrub and low grasses, but when sheep were brough here 150 years ago they thrived and grew thick wool that became the region´s ... read more

Hello dedicated readers! Well, it looks like we've lost nearly all of our entries. Apparently we can somehow regain them if we click here and click there, but I´ll have to wait until I get home to sort that out. For now, I suppose I´ll continue on with our adventures from where we left off. We are now in Punta Arenas, at the very southern tip of South America!!! Punta Arenas is actually as far south as you can go in mainland Chile. It´s also the furthest south you can go along the mainland in the entire world! We were pleasantly surprised to find that Punta Arenas is the most European city of Chile. It´s the first city in which we've seen brick homes and we've been spoiled with hot water and heated homes! We left BA early in the morning, we cleaned our apartment for our rent inspection, said goodbye to people in our building, and caught a plane to Rio Grande, which is on the island on the very tip of Patagonia called Tierra de Fuego. Our plane left at 10:45am, and the flight was supposed to take 3 and a half hours. Half way through the flight, we made an unscheduled stop in a town called Trelew. The town (from what we could see) looked pretty dull. We were forced to wait until 9:30pm until they fixed the problem with the plane. I could not have picked a worse airport to be stuck in, we were tired (had been averaging less than 5 hours sleep in the previous few days). While we were waiting there I thought ... read more

We arrived in Punta Arenas, in Patagonia, yesterday by plane..... the view from the plane of the Andes and the aerial view of Punta Arenas was beautiful! On our first morning it snowed, which was really cool but also really cold!! My face, fingers and toes froze whenever we left the house! But we braved the cold and walked around the town today... although the cold drove us back to our place late in the afternoon! We didn´t get to do the standard tourist visit to their cemetary (!) as it was just too far to walk with frozen toes. And because it´s low season we aren´t able to do the other standard things to do here, such as viewing the penguins etc. We stayed at Hostel Independencia, which is run by Eduardo and his wife ... read more

Oh, we have totally blown our budget! We were chatting to a couple from Luxembourg and they told us about a boat trip they were taking from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas in Chile. We couldn´t bear to take the bus back the way we came, so we did some further investigations. The ´boat trip´was actually a cruise, on board the Mare Australis (an almost brand new boat). The cruise went around Cape Horn then up through the Chilean fiords of Tierra del Fuego. Well, the price was pretty good (it being late in the season now and the weather pretty crap most of the time) so we took the plunge and booked some tickets. We are so glad we did. It was 4 days of total pampering and feasting. The ship had an open bar (which ... read more

There I was happy to find a laundry mat and spent the afternoon exploring the small city. The next morning Jen and I woke up at the crack of dawn to see some penguins!!! There were about ten of us in total, a couple from Argentina and a family from Japan. We got into a small boat on the shore of Seno Otway - on the Strait of Magellan! After about an hour we started to see little penguins bobbing around in the water! We pulled up close to a small island where the shore was covered in sea lions. We noticed the gigantic males first - you couldn’t miss them! They sounded ... read more

My next target was torres del paine national park in chile. From el calafate I took a bus to puerto natales in chile. I was in rush to catch the last bus to the park were I met Laurie. He seemed like a photographer and both of us were keen on finding shelter in the park (remember erratic weather specially its fall there and getting cold). We booked into this very nice refugio, Los torres (more of a moutain house, very comfy, wood heated, gas lit and had a three course dinner for 12 dollars). The park is famous for these three red granite towers called Torres. Turned out that he was a photographer (well a second generation one, actually his sister too) very interesting person and quiet good looking. He was the same age as mine ... read more

Wow!! I just got back from my overnight hike, yesterday we walked about 7km and we did the same today. We were in Torres del Paine and saw the torres and it was pretty amazing. Going into the park (which was expensive if you´re not a citizen of Chile, but don´t worry I am!) it was pretty flat, like there were some hills and all but nothing compared to the mountains, it just seemed like they came errupted out from the earth, they did but just all in one motion, like they had to come out right then and there. The way they were shaped was just straight lines like someone used a ruler it was so strange and so outrages. I´ll post some pics later! But the hike wasn´t tooo terrible, but it did have ... read more

As we drove south from Puerto Natales to Punta Arenas, the landscape changed quite dramatically, from deserted land to woods. Many trees beautifully covered with lichens, guanacos and sheep freely roaming in between them. In Punta Arenas I met with Pedro (a friend from the boat) and Tine, one of the German girls that we hiked with, and we went to see the local cemetery. Why?, you might wonder. These institutions are actually quite interesting to visit here, as you can see some of the most beautiful architecture and landscaping there. The one in Santiago is endless, housing indiscriminately and close together tombs of the size of a large villa and thousands coffins stuffed in one never ending wall. All are buried in these mega cemeteries, no matter the religion and wealth. It was so ... read more
