We were dropped back in to town where we paid $20 for the crappiest sandwiches and coffee we have ever had in our lives – it was like they had been sitting on a bench in the open all day. The coffee was just as bad. My “cappuccino” was a black coffee with froth on top! That’s right, let’s go to all the trouble of making froth and not put any milk in it!
There is a gorgeous ocean rock face right across the road from Chez Jerome that is so spectacular! The caves are accessible by day, however on sunset the tide comes crashing mercilessly in to shore and fills the caves. The water is the most beautiful aqua colour. I could sit here for hours. It is so loud and yet so tranquil. Shane cannot sit here for hours- there is a beer at the mini mart :-)
Dinners at Chez Jerome are shared with the other guests. Sabine and Jean Luc are both published university professors of economics. Thank goodness they spoke English. Almost everyone here speaks French and/or Spanish.
Shane has found the mini mart next door it has beer for 800 pesos, so he’s a happy
camper!
We see our first intact Moai statues on our second day, as well as visiting some other volcanic caves. After being dropped in town, we grabbed some lunch. Empanadas are fast becoming our food of choice! A walk on our own around town with our two new canine buddies, who follow us for hours, is beautiful and apparently if I comment on how amazing the shore line is here one more time, Shane is going to gag me! There’s a quaint little cemetery overlooking the ocean – a lovely resting place.
We are joined for dinner tonight by the two latest guests, Robbie and Alta, both 60 something vivacious America ladies. They have travelled extensively around the world so their tales are really entertaining.
Day 3 finds us on our full day tour and what a day it was! We pretty much did a tour of the entire Island- Anakena beach, and a massive walk into the other volcano, Rano Raraku. This is the highlight of any trip to Easter Island. The 15 Moai statues who keep watch here have a very powerful presence. There is also an archeological dig happening here at the moment which
Chez Jerome
Shore line across from our place is very exciting to see. These statues and the boat houses are being discovered everywhere; however there is no money here to excavate them all, which is a shame.
A last dinner with our new friends finds us with an invitation to stay in Paris when we next visit there :-)
SHANE SAYS: Sharls has already booked a ticket to Paris for next year.
Have arranged an apartment for us to stay in when we arrive in Santiago; however the internet here is not a certainty all the time. We have an address though, so we hope someone is there to meet us!
As we take off down the runway for takeoff, I see Sabine and Jean Luc watching the plane at the airport, so I start waving like an idiot as if they can see us! Oh well LOL
SHANE SAYS: Oh but then she asked me if she open and closed the window blind do you think they will see me. I retorted with no worries Hiawatha, go ahead and use your Morse code signals. I’m sure they will know it is you. Lol
SHARLS SAYS: Smart arse! lol
