Hey, A very nice 6 hour bus journey from Puerto Montt to Pucon on Friday. Beautiful scenry - lots of glistening blue lakes, snow capped mountains, green hills and leafy trees.... gorgeous. And me who is usually bored with scenry! Pucon is like a postcard town - beautiful mountains and lake with the highly impressive Volcan Villarrica towering over it. The volcano is snow capped and smoking! It is so cool. Went on a hike on Sat morning to at the shop for 6.45am.... early start. Got kitted out and then hopped into the bus to go to the national park where the volcano is. Off we went (me thinking after my 35km hike that this would be a walk in the park - silly girl) the first 20 mins were torture - I thought I ... read more

Summary in english: We arrived into Pucon - very touristic village with probably only one highlight - volcano Villarica (very nice). We have not found anything to do here (the path was closed because of snow, everything expensive) and on the next day after our arrival there was nothing to see because of clouds. ... read more

We arrived in Pucon to fulfill a childish ambition to climb an active volcano. However, we were completely ignorant of how difficult the actual task would be! A 4:00am wake-up call greeted us with beautiful weather and our Chilean guides handing us crampons and ice picks... no doubt amused at the bewildered looks on our faces! As the sun rose, we were provided beautiful views of Volcano Villarrica and the surrounding area. Pucon is located in a region known as the Lakes District, a fact which was apparent from the stunning lakes and snow-capped Andes which stretched out into the distance as we began our ascent. The summit of the volcano sits at 2,847 metres above sea level (Mount Kosciosko is 2,200metres above sea level) and the climb of 1,500 metres was to take 6 hours ... read more

Wed. 28th Nov· Monday was a travelling day; an early start to the coach station for 8.30 for the long journey into Chile. The border crossings took time. However the mountain scenery of the Andes en route was stunning. As we were travelling I could see the snow by the roadside, though we had not long come from spring time temperatures. The transformation when we crossed into Chile was dramatic, the landscape changed from scrubland to lush and verdent grassland; there was also a lot of evidence of a better economy: more luxurious houses and newer cars on the roads. Apart from the border corssings we had only one stop before reaching Osorno. I took advantge of that stop to use the services there, however I had to pay to use them; they would not accept ... read more

Pucon is in Chile's Lake District in Northern Patagonia. Chileans come here in the thousands during the summer months, and like the English Lake District it is packed during those months. We are currently in the off-season, so it is relatively quiet at the moment. Like the English Lake District it is popular with outdoor enthusiasts who come here for walking, climbing etc., and we came with these sorts of things in mind. Unlike the English Lake District, there are lots of active volcanoes here, and one of the most popular activities is to climb Villarrica (at 2847 m above sea level), one of the most active in the region. We decide to go up on tour first day here and, for a change, are blessed with good weather (Hence our sunburn). We turn up at ... read more

Don´t cry for me Argentina! That´s it for this beautiful country with so many different landscapes and cultures. We are now in Pucon, Chile.... Hometo an active volcano. Which we climbed... Will tell you more about it. After leaving Bariloche, we head to the Chilean border. While on the bus, we are told we have to finish our food before we get to customs, as the Chilean authorities do not like that you take any meat products, veg or fruit. Too bad... We had a bag full of apples, lemons, bananas to get through to take across to Chile, so we had to stuff ourselves after having our breakfast in Bariloche. The only problem were 2 lemons... What to do with them? The driver suggested we smuggled them and hope for the best. According to him ... read more

Hello campers. Well, started again. Had a decent journey over, well as decent as a 12 hour flight can be. I have a new method of flying - tranquilizers! Slept for nearly 10 hours without having to resort to alcohol. Heather was out for even longer. If i hadnt woken her she'd probably still be on the flight. BA was as cool as ever, ate about our own body weight in cow and drank some more fantastic wine. Bought a beautiful painting of La Boca (a colourful area of the city) from a market. The artist must have been in his eighties and was obviously well respected by all the other artists selling their wares. He was so happy when we bought one of his pictures. We both got big kisses and had to have our ... read more

Now I'm finally off to somewhere that has been recommended to me time and time again by travelers heading north, Pucon. The town of Pucon is the base for many outdoors activities, especially the ascend to the crater of Volcan Villarrica, the reason I was going. Unfortunately, there were no direct buses between Chillan and Pucon that I could easily find, so I ended up taking a bus to the city of Temuco, changing bus terminals and catching another bus onto Pucon. This ended up being a more costly option, but at least I didn't have to wait around until mid-afternoon to catch a bus out of Chillan. On arrival in Pucon, I had no idea where I was going to stay but did have some ideas and then I was approached by someone from ... read more

Yep, we did that volcano that loomed over our house in Pucon!!...and I finally got to look inside the crater of a volcano and the added bonus was that it was spitting magna- absolutely amazing! The downside was the faceful of sulphur and other stinging volcanic gases if you got too close or thw wind changed direction!! So off we trotted, ice pick in hand for a second time which I wasnt expecting to be given and crampones on the feet...Sal was a bit nervous about the climb especially when they were handing these things out...and I have to say it was definitely a harder climb than I anticipated...we ended up climbing up some sections that were up to 35 degree angles!! But it was all worth it for the fact that I finally got to ... read more
