- FOOD: 3 course free meal served on the bus! Such a nice salad, great food all round with avocado in nearly everything, desert at last, pisco sours and LOTS of Chilean wine - AREA: Smooth bus journey but complex border crossing. Tiny, dusty town with a very touristy feel but with a perfect hostal. Restuarants with tables around open fires. Expensive (drinks at near to London prices). El Tatio geyser which is unmissable with a thermal bath; fake village?; Valle de la Luna which must be seen at sunset (intense colours). Archeological museum (lots of mummies) - PEOPLE: 3 roommates who knew friends from Sucre, new friends with plenty of travel tips, friendly locals, MANY tourists. - WEATHER: FREEZING when the sun went in. Sun 5th June: I got up at the same time the ... read more

Hello peoples! After Valparaíso, we headed to Pisqo Elqui, a town in the Elqui Valley about 7 hours north of Valparaíso. It rained for our entire drive there and that night, too. This meant snow on the mountains around Pisquo Elqui and cold, cold temperatures that first night. Luckily, the guy at the hotel leant us an "estufita" (heater). The town of Pisquo Elqui is probably the smallest town we´ve stayed in thus far. It was very relaxing. We were the only people staying at our hotel the first night (23rd). The next day was gorgeous and sunny. We walked around town, enjoying the views of the vineyards and the newly snow-covered mountains. All of the restaurants around town are at least partially outdoors because it is usually quite hot around here. The dining areas of ... read more

Our First Road in a While After being left for a while standing on the border with Chile, our bus finally turned up. I've never been so pleased to see a cloud of dust rising from the road in the distance - the sure sign of a vehicle coming our way. After 5 minutes of dirt track we reached something quite unexpected - a road! The first proper road we'd experienced in quite a long time - it had lines on it, (yellow at the sides and white down the middle) and it also had signs proclaiming a speed limit, warning you of sharp bends etc. Well I was already beginning to like the civilised nature of Chile after less than 10 minutes - and the fact that our driver obeyed the aforementioned speed limit had ... read more

So I met some nice people in Santiago and we planned to meet up in Puerto Montt. I originally never planned to go there so all the sudden I just went into the absolutely wrong direction. After a long ride on the Bus I finally got there, just realized that I totally overpaid for my busticket. They sold me a full cama ticket for about 40 Dollars which is way too much much but how can I know. I never went travelling before and nobody ever told me. Experience makes things much easier but I defenately want to find things out on my own, even if I step into the wrong direction every once in a while. Anyways, when I finally got to Puerto Montt in the morning, it was pretty cold and I was wandering ... read more

San Pedro de Atacama (San Pedro for short) is a small village located in one of the many oases which are founded in the altiplano of the second region of Chile. Along this geographic zone rise some of the highest volcanoes of the Los Andes cordillera. Formerly the center of the Atacama culture, nowadays this small town has a big importance and it is considered as the archeological capital of Chile. But it is important also because of its extreme geographic position, the beauty of the landscape and its eternal blue sky. Due to the amazing landscape of this zone, San Pedro has turned into the start point of the touristic activity and the excursions around the region. Here you can find a big variety of services for the visitors such as lodging, restaurants, tourist ... read more

Greetings from La Paz, Bolivia. The internet here is sooo slow that it has just taken me the best part of 40 minutes to read 3 messages. So, thanks to all of you who have written, and I will try to reply when I next get to a computer with a decent connection! The last few weeks have been mad since leaving Pucon (the volcano place) where I last e-mailed. We went straight up to Santiago, the capital of Chile, and met up with a Chilean friend who took us to his house and made us a home cooked meal (not had one of those in a while) and then drove us into the mountains to see Santiago by night. We could spot our hotel, the Sheraton, shining brightly...!?? When you think of Chile, what do ... read more
