We moeten eerst tickets kopen in het ... read more

Monday 19thJanuary 2015 We spent our last day in Valparaiso walking around the dockyard, to one of the old batteries from the Pacific Wars, and found a nice clean beach (a rarity in Valpo). “Bateria Esmeralda” was built in 1879 and was one of nineteen emplacements around Valparaiso Bay (Los Fuertes en Bahia de Valparaiso); each had three huge canon, so the place was pretty well defended! Early on Saturday morning, at around 5 a.m. the “Golden Princess” slipped into Valpo in the fog. We set our alarm clock, and headed down to the dockyard, to see this impressive “Grand Class” ship shrouded in the dawn mist. It was a beautiful and most impressive sight. Later on, we took a taxi down to the cruise terminal and in no time at all we were checked in ... read more

Just heard there was an earthquake in central Chile yesterday. We are still hundreds of miles to the south, so knew nothing about it. In other words, we are fine. We called at a tiny port called Puerto Chacabuco which is about 8 miles from the larger town of Puerto Aysen. The river that flows between the two used to be navigable, but a recent volcanic eruption made it too shallow. So now all shipping -- including us -- must go to the tiny port. We took the local bus to Aysen (about $1), standing all the way even though a sign clearly indicated no standing was allowed. Also liked the sign that I interpreted as "Bothering the driver can be fatal." It was not a scary ride because we just followed the riverbed, but interesting ... read more

Chileans are very generous and friendly people. My friend Brad had been helping a Chilean named Francisco with his English in exchange for him taking Brad around and showing him the area. When Francisco learned that Brad had invited other volunteers to come to Puerto Aysen to teach English to kids (including his son) he offered at once to let us stay at his cabañas for free. He even made us an asado for us and invited his entire family to come and get to know us. We were the life of the party. Everyone wanted to dance with us and hear story from us. It was an unforgettable night. The next day we they took us to Lago Riesco to sightsee. ... read more

Our kids from the region of Aysen didn't get a chance to have a English Winter Camp because of the harsh winter conditions they had this year. One of the volunteers in my program, Ari, decided to host an English Spring Camp in his school for the kids of Puerto Aysen. We had a total of 40 kids come in and talk in English and play games from the States. It was a blast! We played "nose to toe", dodgeball, scattegories, volleyball, basketball and prepared skits. By the end of the day the kids were happy and us volunteers were exhausted. ... read more

Sometimes it's hard to imagine a world that hasn't been poisoned by human intervention. But going back to Coyhaique from Puerto Aysen I realized that there still is. The Chilean Patagonia is the most beautiful and most peaceful place I've ever seen, and even better, lived. Wherever you look its mountains make you feel like you are part of something bigger than you. With snow covered tops and waterfalls running through every crack available, it is impossible not to stare and let yourself be taken away by this breathtaking place. Everyone should see this and feel this once in their lives before they die. Patagonia Chilena Sin Represas!... read more

On the actual day of Independence we went to a Ramada, which consits of a place with a dance floor with music and tables to eat. Fondas (refreshment stands) offer a tons of Chilean foods including empanadas, parilladas, anticuchos (kabobs), chicha (grape juice before fermentation), and more. At the beginning they had a showcase with all the dances from different parts of Chile: cueca, chamame, cumbia and rancheras. After it was our time to dance, dance and dance until sunrise told us to stop. ... read more
