22.10. Soooooo hungover today! The three of us (matt, savior and me) planned a trip to Florianopolis today, which is about 2 hours south of Blumenau. Savio was having a family meeting and Matt and I joined him to get to see another place in Brazil. On the way there we were all suffering terrible from last night lol I had to really concentrate at every turn to not be sick in savios nice car.. Savio invited us to join him on his family gathering, so we went to his uncles house.. there was soooo much food, about 8 cakes for dessert, it was amazing! Savios family was extremely welcoming and nice to us, loads of them actually spoke german fluently which really surprised me again.. We had a lovely afternoon eating and chatting and eating ... read more

It appears that I will not last long in Florianopolis or more accurately Ilha de Santa Catarina. I was planning on staying for 10 days, but find myself leaving after only 4 days. This place is beautiful, at least since the sun came out yesterday, but for some reason I haven't really been feeling it. Maybe I chose the wrong neighborhood. I chose Barra da Lagoa because it was close to the beach and the hostel that I chose sits high on a hill with amazing ocean views. But all semblance of life, shops, and entertainment are in a neighborhood called Lagoa. My first night a hostel friend and I took the bus to check it out. However, we had to wait like 20 minutes for the bus to take us there, and almost an hour ... read more

The phenomenally big country of Brazil was on our itinery for many reasons; beautiful beaches, exciting cities... but most of all because of it's world famous Carnaval celebrations, a party not to be missed. As we were in the area at the right time of year it would've been rude not to!  The tough decision was deciding where to be for this special time. Rio was too expensive and Salvador too far to travel in the time we had. We had read about some super-clubs with world class DJs performing special Carnaval sets in southern Brazil. So with this in mind a circuitous route brought us to the Ilha de Santa Catarina, Florianopolis. A dip in fortunes and dodgy bus routes left us stranded on an empty road, knocking on doors searching for an illusive guesthouse. ... read more

Day 16 was spent trapped on another hefty long journey . When we arrived at the main bus terminal we had to then catch a bus to a smaller terminal to then catch a local bus to our lovely little apartment. It worked out about the same price each as sharing a dorm in a hostel so for 3 or 4 nights me, Laura and Jo had our own kitchen, living room and outside pool...heaven! Plus the woman that runs it is the most helpful person and so motherly. Her little girl and her friends were throwing waterbombs at each other over the pool whilst us three were sunbathing- nice little cool down! Overall it was a lovely little family run place and I definitely recommend it. Florianopolis is beautiful...me and Jo went to the beach ... read more

Music Festival in Santa Catarina state, in Jaragua do Sul, where I was working. Jaragua is a small city, so I was surprised by a event like that, the whole event was totally free, there were a lot of big sponsors behind that. The event was also international, they brought musicians from so many countries, and the featured one was a young Chinese girl, only 11 years old, but played a wonderful violin, she was so lovely and talent, got the sympathy from everyone there. The presentations were mainly string instruments: harp, violoncello and violin, that was beautiful! Personally I like very much violoncello, there were so many great violoncellists. Suddenly the city was full of arts and musics, so many people walking around with own music instrument, that gave a nice feeling to the city, ... read more

Florianopolis is the beach capital of south east Brasil, with arguably some of the most beautiful stretches of sand in the region. One thing is for sure – there is no short supply of beaches here. Over six days in the southern state of Santa Catarina, Sarah and I visited at least as many beaches and saw countless others. The Atlantic Ocean caresses the south east state of Santa Catarina. The state capital is Florianopolis (Floripa) which boasts some of the highest standards of living in Latin America. Most of its inhabitants are descendants of Portuguese, German and Italian immigrants. With our Portuguese being basically non-existent and many locals not speaking English, it was quite fun to be able to at least speak German with some of the residents. Myself and Sarah, along with our friend ... read more

I have found a new treat, its called Gurana, it’s a naturally occurring food that the Brazilians put on absolutely everything, You can add it to your coffee, use it to liven up your fruit juice and sprinkle it on your food. Instead of coca cola brazilions drink carbonated drinks that are derived from it, its called gurana something-something, I having difficulty pronouncing it contains similar properties to coffee and my new found love for it means I’m out of bed nice and early, into bed nice and late and always in the mood for a good chat. Niamh hates Gurana. As we were both still horrifically sunburnt we decided to hit Centro to check out the Art Gallery and what I thought was the Brazilian museum for natural history. Niamh has a particular soft spot ... read more

Geo: -27.6337, -48.4552Final day in Santa Catarina - not having done a whole lot these past four days, I was determined to check out another part of the island in the last few hours before my flight to Rio. The simplest option was Praia Joaquina and its adjacent sand dunes, which are popular for sand boarding. Had the weather cooperated during previous days I would have tried this out already, but of course that never happened. And as for today ... there just wasn't enough time. According to the hostel, Praia Joaquina is about a 40 minute walk away - wrong! It ended up taking me almost an hour to walk there, so either the hostel's estimate is wrong, or there is some short cut that I missed! I could've simply taken a bus there, but ... read more

Geo: -27.7797, -48.5086Brazilian nightlife ... a definite problem. A big reason many come here is to experience the chaos that Brazil has to offer, but it definitely impacts your ability to enjoy the sights, because it always makes for a late start to the day, by the time you drag your sorry ass out of bed. Couple that with the lack of a rental car, and I didn't head get out to Pantano do Sul until almost 2 PM, since buses don't run all that frequently on Santa Catarina Island. Before getting to Floripa and Santa Catarina, I had these grand plans to go all over the island and see everything the north, east, and south had to offer ... but nope! With public transport, at best you can see one or two places a day. ... read more

Geo: -27.5983, -48.4678The cost of things here in Brazil defies all logic - clothing is super-expensive, with Europeans claiming that things are cheaper back home. Miguel from Portugal told me that Osklen, a Brazilian chain selling designer beach and casual wear, recently opened and subsequently closed a branch in Lisbon, because it was simply too expensive. $150-200 for a pair of casual canvas shoes? Who could afford that in Brazil? Even Solange told me that a shirt from Europe that would cost 40 Reais could sometimes be double that in Brazil. Another quirk of Brazilian math - I had a lunch buffet at Curitiba's municipal market - all you can eat except for the meats, from which you were allowed to choose three items. The stews, salads, pastas, side dishes, and desserts were unlimited. Great value ... read more
