Greetings all from Rio, on the top 5 list of one of the most romantic cities on the planet. This is our first night here. For those of you who have been here, we are in the Everest Rio Hotel in Ipanema. Unfortunately, the atmosphere has been colored by a police action through the city streets, M-16´s firing, people in buses and cabs ducking, etc. etc. My four female colleagues from Jackson State just got back. It was supposed to be a shopping trip at the "Hippie Fair" but they ended up in the middle of a shootout and turned around quick! Despite all that, I hope to have a really good time here and I am practicing my ducking just in case! We flew into Rio from Salvador, State of Bahia, late this afternoon. Bahia ... read more

Greetings, I am new to Travelblog and to blogs in general; but I thought how great an outlet this is for those who wish to share their tales of travel and photos of exotic places. I have been traveling to Brasil for the last eight years. I have spent a good deal of time in the northeast (Recife, Fortaleza, Belem) and even more time in Salvador and Rio de Janeiro. Over the years my confidence (as well as my Portuguese vocabulary) has grown and I enjoy getting away from the normal touristic spots and finding new places to explore. For my initial blog I will deal with those places that most tourists will likely visit and as time goes by I willbe more than happy to share my experiences off the beaten path. This passed May ... read more

Well I figure that after Bolivia and the World's Most Dangerous Road took its shot at me, Brazil wanted to get in on the act too. After leaving the delights of the Incas behind, it was time to head back to the beach and move onto Brazil. Unfortunately, from this point on, my trip kind of took a turn for the worse. It started when we left La Paz, we took a flight to Iguazu Falls, via Sao Paulo and landed in Brazil. I was still feeling extremely tender after the copping an absolute beating on the WMDR but if the body’s outsides were hurting after the ride, it would be nothing compared to the way my insides would feel about 24 hours later. After forking out money back home for a visa and a Yellow ... read more

Gary and I are in Internet in Sao Paulo trying to down load our pics from Rio. The weather was great the last day (of Course) and the Christ the Redeemer statue is tremendous. Cannot explain the feeling looking out over Rio standing at the feet of Christ who looked distinctly Brazilian. Just like Mexico where he looks hispanic! Hope our pictures get posted ok. Had a guide named Antonio who spoke spanish pretty well--he works for the hotel as guide and driver. He gave us a card for future trips and told us he would get us a ´flat´for 2 or 4 people next time. So, Gary and I were thinking that the famous Brazilian Carnival might be a great time to come back. I know many of you will be putting that on your ... read more
