Well finally made it after years of talking about it... Flight not too bad - bit long at 14 hours though... First experience of Brazilian driving wasn´t as bad as I thought but still pretty hair raising. My lack of the local language was apparant from the word go and really no-one speaks english. Getting by with my phrasebook though! First hostel was really nice, got talking to a couple of young irish girls who are really nice. Was sharing with an other couple and it turns out they´re from Harrow - which is a big coincidence in itself but turns out he´s actually went to st joans!! Very sound bunch. But had to move on today to another hostel, did´t really want to leave other place as the people are lovely and I was settled ... read more

For those of you expecting every entry in this journal to be tales of drunken escapades I´m afraid we´re going to have to disappoint because we´ve actually being doing other things over the last few days. Admittedly most do involve alcohol! So, where did we leave you? The heat of Rio on Sunday and plans for a tourist adventure on Monday... We had a bit of a wander on Sunday night along Copacabana beach and then decided to grab a bite to eat. The way the restaurants work over here is very different, it just involves massive amounts of food (meaning Andy is in his element!!). Anyway we all had the most massive brilliant steak meal with all these lovely accompaniments and I really can´t describe how great it was. Suffice to say it was Steak-a-riffic... ... read more

the last few days we spent in rio going an assortment of blocos, these are basically a tradition that started with carnival where each block has a band that plays on the flat bed of a truck and then everyone from the neighborhood (and anyone eles who wants to join in) follow behind and drink a ton of beer and sing along. they were great fun and also very tiring. one of them went on for about 3 hrs cruising down the one of the biggeset streets in rio. we spent today soaking up the atlantic ocean and the sun south of the equator. we are in a little colonial villiage named paraty that has kept much of its charm and color from the 17th century. the streets are sort of cobbel stoned but when it ... read more

Sitting in a hostel in Rio typing this, marvelling at the extreme weather change between NY and Rio. Since we caught up with you all last we bummed around NY for a few more days, and killed time yesterday (Sat) going to watch Meet The Fockers in a cinema which seemed to have a fairly easy going attitude to admitting homeless bums and total weirdos. Film was pretty amusing but were put off slightly by the strange American going "Oh Boy..." everytime something embarassing was going to happen. Got to JFK airport well in time for our 10:30pm flight thanks to a taxi travelling at the speed of sound (despite us having plenty of time) and had a pretty packed flight from New York to Sao Paulo, which arrived about 10:30 this morning and then we ... read more

To all our adoring fans, we are still alive, and well too. The reason for the dearth of Travelblog entries over the past few weeks is that we've been busy, very busy in fact. I will begin with the most exciting and interesting article first to keep you interested, and fill in the gaps with the other places we've been to at a later date, for those who insist on 100% coverage. In one line though (current status): We're in New Zealand, with a van. Weather and people nice. Rio de Janeiro I've titled this article "The Marvelous City" because that is the translated name given to Rio de Janeiro by those in the know. I can confirm that the title is a true and accurate description of Rio (I will henceforth call it, simply, 'Rio' ... read more

hey all, much catching up to do... have been in rio for a few days staying on copacabana! very hard staying here and not singing the song everyday as you walk down the street. we got in near midnight and headed straight out to Lapa with this aussie guy we met in the hostel who said there was a big street party going on. it was absolutly massive. not street party but a few city blocks party! dancing, drinking, music coming out of the walls it just doesnt stop in rio. but we were up early the next day because our room was a sauna. we headed up to Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer), the massive statue of christ that watches every part of rio. the clouds were low when we were there and every now ... read more

this will be short but at least it is a start. we are in brazil in a little hostel called crab hostlè. This morning we got up had a little cafè and walked two blocks to the white sandy beach of ipanema. the sand was so warm that it was buring our feet. for those that have never made it to rio, it is must see. the beach is surrounded by jungle covered hills, all of the buildings have little terraces that are covered with flora of all kinds, and everywhere you walk people are going to the beach. Tomorrow we are staying with the Serra´s and will be able to explore more....things to come...hanggliding of sugar loaf?? Surfing in apadora? hiking the rio blanco trail and more. Love to everyone!! Ben and alana... read more

Visiting Rio de Janeiro is always an amazing experience. It was Erik’s first visit and we spend 3 days there. We visited the usual stuff such as the Sugar Loaf, Redeemer Christ, Botanic Garden, Ipanema and Copacabana beaches and other nice spots. A shame that the weather wasn’t good but it was really hot and humid. Rio at night is an amazing experience. The Lagoa da Conceicao is such a stunning place. As Erik say, no doubt that Rio is among the most beautiful cities in the world. We haven’t taken nice photos this time but we promise next time we’ll do better. ... read more
