We had an interesting journey getting to Rio de Janeiro... Arriving about 2 hours early at the airport (as we believed you were supposed to do), we headed for the check-in desk and were a little horrified to be told that our flight had been overbooked and we couldn´t fly until the next day!!! What the!?! So a bit deflated we headed towards another desk where they´d arrange a hotel for the night and compensation for the inconvenience. Maria did a great job of arguing our case (as she would!) and we were more than surprised when they told us we could not only board the flight that night as planned, but that due to lack of seats in economy we'd have to fly Business Class!!! Well, no complaints there!!! Woo-hoo!! So, after a nice glass ... read more

We made another brief stop off in Paraty, a beautiful colonial town on the coast which has an old fashioned charm about it. We spent our day there wandering around the cobbled streets and looking in the cute little shops. There is a picturesque harbour there and several islands off the coast. Unfortunately it didn´t stop raining while we were there so we couldn´t appreciate the beaches surrounding Paraty, therefore we decided to move on to Rio in search of some sunshine...... read more

Sorry bout the long delay in entries, a long one to make up for it…. In prior entries, I mentioned that the Brazilian culture is very open and friendly and this extends to greetings. When men meet, the traditional right handed firm handshake is custom, but Brazilian women are always greeted with a kiss on the cheek. In Sao Paulo they kiss one time on the right cheek. In Rio it’s once on the right and once on the left, and in some cities in the south they kiss three times- right, left, right. You do not actually turn and give a full fledge peck on the cheek- you touch cheeks and simultaneously make a kiss sound. But don’t go around kissing everyone you meet. If there is a big difference in age or you meet ... read more

I got on the bus and for the first time in Brazil since the (ahem) airport incident I was alone. The bus drive was uneventful. I recall looking out the window to the Impatiens covering the side of the road and I thinking of about home. As the bus flew by a blur of Impatiens I kept tab of how much they would go for at good old Pipkin’s. I lost interest after about 1000 dollars worth or so- any aspiring flower importers out there? I arrived at the bus station in Rio de Janeiro, and I did not see Clara. This left me with no choice but to face my arch nemesis, the Brazilian public phone. Due to a number of error messages I could not understand, I had yet to successfully complete a phone ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Ilha Grande October 23rd 2005

We arrived in the small town of Angra dos Reis late, and missed the public shuttle boat to Ilha Grande. At first I was worried we would have to find a hotel in the crummy little city, but those fears were unfounded. In Brazil, you can always get around the official way if you have a little patience, and more importantly, money. We (and by we I mean they) asked around a little, and met a Brazilian guy around 21. While I do not remember his name I do remember the large tattoo of a mermaid that covered his calf. He was on his way to Ilha Grande as well, and he told us about a boat for 20 reais (10 dollars.) The four of us went to get some food and when we finished the ... read more

He muttered something in Portuguese I couldn't understand. Carol did and she told him that it was a quarter past 7. He crouched down and began to talk to Carol. The first thing I thought was he is trying to sell drugs, but there was something wrong in his tone of voice. For a moment, I wondered why he was getting angry. Then Carol told me to give him my wallet and the hostility made sense. It seemed like a safe situation. Granted, before coming to Brazil I had read a lot of robberies occur on the beach, but there were still people walking by. Around 150 feet to our left we could see a family enjoying the beach. While the sun had gone down it was still a half an hour from getting dark. The ... read more

Carol, Giselle and I arrived in Rio around 11:00. The first thing I noticed was the number of people with shirts that read estacionamento- Portuguese for parking. They seemed to be all over the place, and I wondered why there were “so many parking cops.” It turns out they are the humane parking meters of Brazil. When you are parking they guide you into the space, if it is sunny they cover your window with an old piece of cardboard, and when you leave they help you get out of the spot. Nothing in life is free, and the services of these men and women are no exception. The more demand for the parking spot the higher the price, but generally you give pocket change if it is not busy, two or three reais (around ... read more

08:00 Sat. Here we are, safe and sound - and shattered. Now all we have to do is get a bus into Ipanema. The hotel we booked is rubbish, so tomorrow we move to a good one. Early night. Sun. This packing / unpacking is a pain - after that, off we go sightseeing. The beaches and people are fantastic, but we coul´m´t recommend it as a holiday destination. The city of Rio de Janeiro is huge, crowds of people everywhere. The view from Sugar Loaf alone is worth the journey - breathtaking! - a cross between Sydney, Hong Kong & New York. Police on every street corner and beggars everywhere else, but we felt safe enough. Rio very expensive, so we had to blow the budget sometime. Mon. The clouds on the mountains have lifted, ... read more

Arrived at the Botafogo Easy Hostel, set two blocks from the beach. Looked like a proper hostel with lots of people coming in and out of the place, and a bar and mini pool. Went up to Santa Teresa for a proper visit after our Corcovado trip cut our previous visit short. Lin was all smiles on the Tram ride both up and down. Some people are easy to please! We walked through the cobbled streets taking in views of the Favelahs below. Saw the film Á Virgin at 40´ . Gave us alot of laughs and the Portugese subtitles must have got the humour across well, as the audience loved it. Went out for a meal on thursday with Chris and Audrey. Nice to see them again before we left Rio. They directed us to ... read more
