Day 7 here in Rio has come to an end and we've been going flat out all day! Many hours spent on transit crisscrossing the greater Rio area in order to cheer on our Canadian athletes and some Brazilians too. The City of Rio and the Organizing Committee are doing a incredible job moving tens of thousands of people hourly, hundreds of thousands daily on the transit system around the City. Trains, buses and subways connect seamlessly, run on time and the transit staff have been superb. A truly massive effort and achievement by everyone involved. Having said that, it is super later and we are back at it again tomorrow so the blog might be a bit shorter than usual tonight (we've said that before and it ends up being super long). We got our ... read more

Another day is over here at the Olympics in Rio with day #4 in the books. We were up earlier this morning and headed back to Olympic Park. We didn't have a chance yesterday to mention it, but Rio has done a fantastic job with their brand-new subway line (Line #4) connecting the southeast coast and beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema with the southwest coast of the the city (the Barra region). What's interesting is that right now the new line is only used for those traveling with the Rio Olympic Transit Pass as well as a ticket to an event that day. No locals have had the opportunity to use this new subway line yet. The stations are absolutely beautiful, completely finished, bright, modern and spacious. This will be a major legacy for the people ... read more

Day #5 proved to be 'one of those days' where we dealt with a few unlucky situations and then tried to make the best of them! We were due to be at the Olympic Rowing Stadium at Lagoa Bay bright and early this morning at 8:30am. To get to that venue, we needed to be up and out of the apartment by 7:30am. Apparently, setting an alarm on very little sleeps means sometimes the result is a lot of sleep. We woke up at exactly 11:38am this morning! If you're doing the quick math, this means we missed rowing by...a lot of hours. We weren't due to get to Olympic Park tonight until 10:30pm to watch Men's Basketball China vs. Venezuela. Both of us love the Olympics, love watching events...but those two teams are ranked last ... read more

Day 2 here at the Olympics was a full day of Women's Basketball. We woke up early in order to travel to the Deodoro cluster of Olympic sites. Part of the Rio Organizing Committee's strategy was to spread the Olympic sites out around Rio. The Deodoro cluster is about an hour train ride northwest of the city centre. The cluster hosts all of equestrian events, handball, field hockey, shooting and women's basketball. There is a practice pool there too. The cluster itself actually is completely within a huge military base. Picture the Olympic venues sitting inside CFB Borden or CFB Garrison. To say that security was at a maximum at this location would be an understatement. We felt extremely safe, as we have during the entire trip so far. When you consider we have roughly 30,000 ... read more

A quick blog today at the end of Day 3. We will be back at the Olympic Park in the morning for Tennis all day on the 'side courts' -- not the main stadium, but courts 3 to 9. We just arrived back at the apartment and while our Men's Basketball game tonight ended around midnight, it is now just after 4:00am. For some reason the subway was not working this evening, so a parade of buses brought us back from Olympic Park to the Lapa area (normally about an hour on the subway). Needless to say we arrived back here wanting to get as much sleep as possible before we turn around and do it all again tomorrow morning. Having said that, it was our first trip into the Olympic Park and the Barra de ... read more

While they call it Day #1 of the Olympics even tough competition has been happening for a few days and the Opening Ceremonies were yesterday. It is the first full day of competition throughout the various venues here in Rio and it was also our first day with tickets to an event. The men's cycling road race this morning was a non-ticketed event which allowed tons of locals and visitors to take in the race at various points throughout the course without a ticket. We've been big fans for Italy's Vincenzo Nibali and we were disappointed when he crashed out on the final decent of the day! These guys rode their guts out for over 6 hours on one of the toughest Olympic courses ever, for over 230km, only to lose out on a medal a ... read more

Welcome to our Rio 2016 blog! We started this back in London and not only was it a great way to keep in touch with everyone back home, it has also been a great way to look back on our trip years later. Our plan is to create a blog for each day we are here during the Olympics which start today for us with the Men's Road Race (cycling) and then late night Beach Volleyball on the shores of Copacabana Beach. The trip here was a close to perfect as you could want. All of our flights were on time and surprisingly comfortable. Before leaving Toronto we had a chance to hang out in the Air Canada lounge with what seemed to be tons of Canadian Olympians. We saw our local team (Women's Basketball) as ... read more

Flying into Rio, you could see Christ the Redeemer in the distance along with the famous coast lines, along with Mount Sugar Loaf and the Olympic Stadium. Filled with anticipation we landed at Rio airport over the ocean and in no time checked into our hotel. We wandered around the city centre, homeless people everywere ...... no doubt they are going to be ushered out of the city when the Olympics are hosted. But so far not a trace of Olympic fever, no banners, no merchandise products, no sponsorship signs and only 6 weeks to go. The next day my dream of seeing Christ the Redeemer came true boarding the tram that climbs to the top. How magnificent he his and the veiw of the most breath taking coast line that surely is the most recognised ... read more

As our plane flew into Rio, we were amazed by the beauty of the scenery beneath us! The mountains, turquoise sea, white beaches and green rainforests surrounding the city are simply stunning. We were expecting to relax a little and enjoy the city at a leisurely pace as we had 12 days here. It soon became apparent however, that there was far too much to see and do to allow that, especially during carnival week! it also became obvious very quickly that we were going to be moving a lot more slowly than we had been due to the extreme heat here… It was 42 degrees on our second day! Aside from the insane heat, Rio is such an exciting city and provided an amazing way to finish our incredible six months of travelling around The ... read more

Obviously, Rio de Janeiro is an iconic city for many reasons. There’s Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf Mountain, football and, of course, Carnival. We didn’t plan to be here for carnival – it kind of happened by fluke – but we’re so glad it did! So, we landed and soon realised the extent of the madness that is Rio in carnival time. The taxi driver was getting more and more irate as every road he wanted to go down seemed to be shut – and we were panicking as the meter was going up! Anyway, we arrived at our AirBnB place to find a lovely little studio flat in the middle of Lapa, samba town, and our host Alex waiting for us. It soon became obvious that Alex was in the carnival spirit himself and, as ... read more
