Bonjour People, We feel we have seen the main attractions in Rio now, so we are generally just chilling for the next 5 days before we start on the next big trip around the USA. So today we had another relaxing morning at the hostel. I started putting some notes together for my interview, we casually looked at houses for sale in Southampton, Neil’s been in contact with people from work too and we watched a few Grimm episodes throughout the morning too. We had that amazing salad for lunch again too. About 3pm we decided to walk to the Copacabana shopping streets but we got a bit lost because there are huge hills dotted over the city, which limits your access around streets. So whilst trying to walk around this one hill we ended up ... read more

6/22 Arranged to meet the Manaus group at the entrance to FanFest in Copacabana at 8:30am. I took a taxi there and waited. They had heard about vans going from the beach to the statue of Jesus. After asking hotel staff in the area Melinda found a line of people down the street for the vans. After waiting in line for about 20 minutes to get tickets on of the guides told us that there was zero visibility at the statue. We decided to go up anyways. You can't come to Rio and not go to Christ the Redeemer. The van took us all the way up to the top. The ride up was steep, windy, and cobblestone roads. That plus the way the guy drove us made it feel like a roller coaster, except actually ... read more

My last post didnt seem to have much of an end, due to the fact i wrote it a few weeks befire i left and couldnt work out how to edit it so just hit publish to sAVE any wasted effort! So, i safely made it to Rio after what seemed like anever ending journey! We got the 6.30am train from glasgow to euston where we made our way to our hotel in peckham. Peckham was pretty grotty, dont think ive seen somewhere with so much rubbish thrown abouts the streets. Aside from that all good there,it was used as a base for us. I spent the day or rather a few hours in brighton (everything takes sooooo long to do anything in london) before getting ready to go for a night out at a place ... read more

Obvious blog title but fitting nonetheless for our first blog post for Rio de Janeiro! So we arrived! After a four hour delay at Heathrow due to a faulty mechanism that stops the engines icing over. I was secretly bricking it but had to pretend to be brave... It wasn't helping my mini fear of flying. Anyway, fix number three(!) seemed to work a charm and we were off. Arriving at our hostel at 2am, a bit tired and grubby. After a proper sleep, we decided to take it easy and relax on Copacabana beach... as you do! We had our f... read more

Another part of the Rio Carnival experience are the balls that are held at clubs all over the city. We’d partied on the streets, beaches and in bars. We’d spent a night cheering on the samba schools at the sambadrome. Now it was time to head to the final and biggest ball of carnival the Rio Scala Gay Ball. The ticket blurb said: The Gay Costume Ball is among the biggest parties at the Scala Club in downtown, the event is billed as one of the most extravagant, marking the end of Carnival celebrations. Gays, lesbians, drag queens and transvestites come up with the most exotic costumes, making a grand entry to the club. Some exotically adorned and others shockingly exposed, but all with the aim of kicking up a storm on a night filled with ... read more

Spent Saturday at old rio market, which happens on the first Saturday of every month in Lapa. Was pretty cool, wasn't the full of street music and dancing as we'd been told but was still fun. Then went to see the cathedral which everyone was talking about. It was the single ugliest building I've ever seen. No idea what possessed them to build that but some sort of hallucinogenic must have been involved. We got a little lost afterwards and ended up walking down a street where a friend and I stopped, turned to each other and said 'not going down here'. Got a pretty bad vibe from the area in general so we headed back to the beach. Saw a Redbull slackline competition on the beach which was pretty cool. Left Rio on Sunday It ... read more

Aline is holding an art exhibition in her apartment on the day I arrive. Brilliant timing on my part as usual but she is really excited about it so i step over the couple sleeping in the living room and crash for a few hours before it starts. My new host has a shaved black ponytail striped through with green, seaweedy purple tatoos swirled up her legs and huge infectious grin. Her apartment is small but with a fabulous view of the city and on her wall she's painted a caricature of herself with the words: "Love brings us closer" written on her bum cheek. Well amen to that. After a couple of hours sleep I get up and decide to do a sight. I suppose there will be much time for navel gazing and philosophizing ... read more

It is with deep regret and a heavy heart that your correspondent writes this entry. Why – because it is the last one from Brazil and that means our adventures are at an end. Before we go, let me update you on our last days of travelling in South America. We decided to head west from Salvador to a town called Lencois. It was a good idea to head west, as heading east would have taken us straight into the Atlantic. Lencois is a small place in the Chapada Diamante National Park in the Brazilian mountains. We had been reliably informed by Alex (hostel owner in Salvador ) that it would be much cooler in the mountains, so, Wendy packed as many jumpers and coats and warm clothes as the rucksack would allow. Guess what? That’s ... read more

This was written when we left Rio but the internet crashed at the vital moment. Backtracking a little, Tuesday night wasn´t exactly as expected. We ended up in Lapa via a circuitous route, sat there and just watched the world go by. Although this sounds quite uneventful it was actually quite enjoyable. Next up we visited a favela, on our own and when the police were apparently on strike. We ascended an interesting version of a cable car that felt like it might break any minute and then wandered down through the narrow paths amidst chickens, dogs, cats and the occasional toothbrush. It was so higgledy-piggledy that it could have been designed by an architect, but I´m guessing they don´t need planning permission there. After the scrum of Copacabana, Botofogo beach was completely empty, which meant ... read more
