We were supposed to take a night bus from Salvador to Recife, our next destination, but thanks to the help of the tourist agency in our hotel in Salvador (Hotel Pelourinho, really friendly staff!) we ended up buying a cheap flight ticket with Webjet. You can imagine our relief at being able to exchange a 16 hour bus ride for an hour's flight! Why Fernando do Noronha? Lonely Planet totally recommends the place, and it also made the UNESCO World Heritage list, but coincidentally, before travelling to Brazil I had read a very convincing article in a travel magazine. So as soon as we walked out of Recife's arrivals, we walked right back into a travel agency to check out availability, keeping in mind that our trip to Noronha was not included in our plans, meaning ... read more

Flew to Fernando do Noronha, a group of islands off the coast of Brazil by a 2 hour flight. Spend 3 days there. Stayed at Pousada Marvilha, which overlooked the Bay of Sueste, where the main turtle feeding ground is. Our room had an outdoor bed and a beautiful view of the bay. The pousada also had a swim-in steam room, which Garth and I used to its fullest. We spent our 3 days on the islands by visiting as many beaches as possible and snorkeling. The highlight was our snorkel in Bay of Sueste to swim with the turtles - we saw at least 30 turtles, some at least 4 feet long. Other highlights include sundowners at the beach bar at Praia da Ponceicao, snorkeling at Sancho beach (after climbing down a cave ladder to ... read more

... read more

Summer Paradise! So, how was that summer? Hope you had the chance to get out of the Low Lands/England, ´cause from what I hear there wasn’t much summer around there. If however you didn’t yet, and is now time to plan a warm break, I know just about the right place: Fernando de Noronha island in Brazil! Yes, I was on that piece of Paradise this summer! It’s an ecological archipelago of 21 islands with tourist entrances being limited and charged with an eco-tax depending on the duration of the stay. It is located less than 4 degrees south of the Ecuador, so a sort of the Galapagos in miniature, were you can watch dolphins or turtles in their natural environment. Noronha island is wild, amazingly beautiful and peaceful (there are no chain hotels, you have ... read more

Fernando de Noronha - 19th to 23rd April Fernando de Noronha is an archipelago 400km of the coast of mainland Brazil. In the past the main island has been used as by the Portuguese as a prison colony, the French used it for aviation research & the American´s as base during WWII. Now most of it is a protected Eco reserve where sea life flourishes & to sum it up it´s stunningly beautiful & it´s where we went for my birthday treat. Lucky lucky me!!! Our four days there were some of the best of our whole trip. The main island is beautiful, green & lush with cliffs, hills & gorgeous beaches, some calm & perfect for snorkeling, others with good surfing waves. All the beaches were gorgeous backed with lush green hills & Palm ... read more
