Wow, Wow, Wow x 100000!! I am so stunned by what I have seen today, Its hard to think of anything else to say to describe it! I have been looking forward to seeing the Iguazu falls, for what seems like the whole of my life... and today I was there! Not only that, Lo and I had the most amazing adventure packed day around the falls. Ok (deap breaths...) The day started with us crossing over to Brazil with our driver and the lovely Claire & Nathan who we met in our hostel - the fantastic Hostel Inn (hello!). I have never been on a day trip to Brazil before, so you can imagine how exciting it was! We first went cycling for 9Km through the jungle on proper mountain bikes, the trees were amazing ... read more

South America » Brazil » Paraná » Ilha do Mel December 21st 2005

So after sending out the last batch of blogs, Jen and I sat around the port in Paranagua drinking some beers and waiting happily in the sun for our boat to Ilha do Mel. Not long before the boat arrived the clouds rolled in and it began to downpour. Instead of the hour and a half beautiful scenic ride to the island we expected we were met with head on winds, driving rain, thunder and lighting. The boat chugged along fine at first but after about an hour the rain started seeping in through cracks in the ceiling and everyone on the boat had to huddle in the one dry area in the front. It was kind of exciting. For awhile we wondered if we would find the port and if we would even make it ... read more

After a 2.5 weeks stunt in Buenos Aires, I was -in a sadistic way- pleased to get back to the motorcycle. Flying back to Guaruja (Brazilian South coast) to met Ted (back from Hawaii). I even managed a quick swim before leaving for the world-reknowned 275 falls of Iguazu. My Saddle Before telling more about this watery Unesco site, I should first say a bit about my ´home´on the road for the last 3 months... for the ones wondering. On the first photo, you´ll see me with my full gear on (waterproofed that day with extra internal liners), and my absolutely essential A$2 foam seat (from Crazy Clark). There´s also a little back rest home made with a folded foam bag. Distance wise, I´ve classified the 500 km long trip as "Are we there yet?" and ... read more

South America » Brazil » Paraná » Curitiba December 17th 2005

From Parati we took a bus to Sao Paulo and then from there another bus to Curitiba. In total we spent 12 hours traveling. We arrived at our hotel late on Thursday nigt and crashed. Curitiba is a city made up of decendants of Polish, German and Italian immigrants. It is also one of the best run cities in Brazil with health, transportation and education systems that are some of the best in the country. The center of the city is totally pedestrianized so it was a good place to wander for a couple of hours. We then visited the botanical gardens, the Oscar Niemeyer museum (brazilian architect) and saw a bunch of parks. Curitiba is a city full of parks and lots of culture so it was really nice to walk around and soak it ... read more

I am in love - Brazil is such a fantastic country! To be fair I have only seen such a small part of it, but it is so beautiful and everything so far seems so great - the weather, the scenery and the people... This blog is about a few different places as we have done a few days here and there. Firstly we left Foz and went to Curitiba. We were going to go slightly lower to Florianpolis which is supposed to be really nice, but we just didn´t feel like the extra time on buses!! We got in quite early to Curitiba, and decided to splash out a bit and stay in a hotel. The hotel was lovely, nothing overly fancy but newish, clean great breakfast AND afternoon tea! Also the staff were great ... read more

Well i have to say after my rather unfortunate start to this expedition things have begun to take a turn for the better. I last left you somewhat tired after a rather gruelling trip to Rio, although i have to say that having arrived it was definately worth it. What can i say about Rio, as you fly in you see a sprawling city, surrounded by mountains, it even has mountains in the middle of the city with the houses just lapping up against the sides. The mountains are beautiful, the beaches are beautiful, the women are beautiful in fact all round it is a pretty attractive place. Having recovered from my journey with dinner and a particularly well earned rest i went out sight seeing. I ended up heading out with a german guy from ... read more

Hi everyone... So it,s our last day in Rio and indeed South America...and since it´s still raining in Rio (song title?)...weve decided to camp in the Internet cafe and catch up on a few blogs. Never mind the rain though...we´ve had the most fantastic brilliant superb time...thoroughly recommended to anyone lucky enough to have the chance. Looking forward to getting home though.. Steve has already preordered a Vindaloo from the Lucknow for Thursday evening. Looking forward to seeing everyone (you know who you are) at the Xmas do at the weekend... Maybe some last comments from you on this or the Rio blog to follow ?? Anyway...our guide book says..If you think Iguazu falls are simply Niagra in the South...then think again. Niagra is but a mere drop in the ocean compared to Iguazu. Quite a ... read more
