I had planned to make an early start from PJC the next day, and catch the 6am bus to Campo Grande. Yes thats right 6am. I can see you sniggering in the back. And snigger even more, because I pulled my favourite trick and missed the bus. Never fear, I just got a later one, and pulled up into Campo Grande at 10pm. One free night in a hostel, and excellent Brazilian breakfast later, I was signed up for a Pantanal tour and hitting the road! The van escorted a group of 7 of us - myself, Mac, Marty, Donna, Pipin, Inge and Emmanuel - towards Brazilian´s famous wetland, often thought of as the best place in South America to see jaguars. What excitement! Unfortunately, the group was split early on by a division in social ... read more

Hi there folks, apolgies for the delay in blog entries. We´ve hardly had a day free but here we are . Well we made it to Bonito after a 16 hour horrificly bumpy minibus ride (which wasn´t helped by the fact that one of our comrades kept farting every 5 seconds...in an enclosed space...you know what I mean!!). Prior to starting the journey we spent an hour in Subway waiting for about 86 employees to make 3 take out sandwiches. Mine (Neil), the italian BMT had to be scrapped twice whilst the "sandwich engineers" free styled on the ingredients. Once we got on the bus at 10pm the two drivers (little and large) decided to play bangin Brazilian house music with the air con on over drive. Anyhoo, on our first day we went to a ... read more

Tim Version: * Stayed in the Pantanal region a few days walking, boating and horse riding on the hunt for elusive wildlife. * Saw many animals, had both good and bad times and it all came down to the guide and the group. The version dangling above a very hungry Cayman like some of the poor piranha we caught: *** QUICK NOTE *** If you want Pantanal advice for tours from Campo Grande, though really it is just information on one tour group, then hopefully this entry will help you out... I couldn't find much info so will detail all I can here. For anyone just having a read for a quick rundown I apologise because this means I'll be sticking in more detail than you would want to read to try and help those going ... read more

We had a few more nights out in Rio after this. I kissed a sexy Isreali girl one night before we headed onto the Panthanal. We made the mistake of travelling to Corumba, a one hourse town that belongs in a county like Laois, to enter the Panthanal and ended up retracing our steps for 2 hours to enter the National Park. The Panthanal is an area bigger than France, made up of swampland and jungle. We were greeted by a jeep with a big box on the back that brought us to Santa Clara Pousada, which is in fact a farm. We were worried by the lack of guests on the first night and are fears were compounded each day as the numbers dwindled and not a single bird never mind a looker in the ... read more

My Brazilian odissey actually started as I was leaving Uruguay: I went to the town of Chuy at the border, and the plan was to leave for Brazil the next day... But that was before I got there and realised that all the shops had huge ´free shop´signs on them: now unfortunately, that did not mean they were actually free, but they were duty free, good enough for me! I needed to buy clothes for my return to kind of normal life, so the next day I set off... Amazing what 10 months without shopping can do to a girl, I was going from shop to shop like a lunatic: I´d just finished reading one of the ´shopaholic´books (not the read of the century, but kept me busy on the beach!) and throughout the book, I ... read more

PANTANAL The Pantanal is a vast network of wetlands that extends into Paraguay and Bolivia, but the vast majority is in Brazil. During the rainy season the numerous rivers swell, forcing exotic animals to cluster together on small patches of land, making for some amazing wildlife viewing. It's not uncommon to spot a wild jaguar this time of year. Originally we were planning on seeing our wildlife in the Amazon, but everyone we talked to said that you never see anything, at most you just hear the animals. We usually don't take organized tours, but the amazing number of activities they pack into a few days made it very tempting. We packed our bags into a small van along with a British couple, Tristen and Ceri, that proceeded to drive for 5 hours over a dusty ... read more

January 6, 2009 two days of “Bush camping” It seems so strange because it is hot and rainy here in Brazil and it is hard to imagine that this is January and not July. We are camped off the highway on a sandy road in the middle of the forest/bush. We are on a two day journey to the Pantanal, a huge wetlands area reputed to hold more species of wildlife than any other place in Brazil. So we have pulled off the highway, pitched our tents and cooked dinner…and then eaten it and cleaned up in a light rain. Fortunately for me, I have a good dry tent and that is where I am right now. The drive was very scenic, rolling green hills with farmland, a variety of trees and palms, and ocassionally heavily ... read more

THE PANTANAL The pantanal was our highlight of our trip to Brazil. It is the worlds largest wet land although we were here in the dry season. We spent 4 days 3nights sleeping in hammocks in the middle of nowhere. We saw loads of wildlife, went on jungle treks, rode horses, fished for phiranas(i managed to get bitten), saw amazing sunsets and got drunk with great people. Pirayaer er djevel-fisker!... read more

Dag 133.

Dag 132. Eirik vaaknet i panikk kl. 05, noe krop i haaret hans. Baatturen varte i litt over 2 timer. Levi, guiden vaar, var veldig flink ... read more
