Hola! Sad as it is, the first thing that Sarah and I did when we got into Campo Grande after our 5 hour dirt road return from the Pantanal was blog about it. Sad, but true. Watching the sun set into the silver lined clouds I came to the realization that in the short few days that I have spent in this foreign land, I have conquered fears and explored wonders that have left me knowing that if I had to go home tomorrow I would be satisfied just as well. The 300 or so mosquito bites that span the tip of my toes to just behind my right ear do not even faze the delightful memories of the one of a kind Brazillian Pantanal. A mysterious wet land area of Southern Brazil is home to ... read more

The Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world with vast amounts of wildlife. This was not part of our original itinerary so we were not entirely sure of what to expect. The first signs were not good when we spotted that our guide was missing a finger. Undeterred we set off on a 4 hour bus ride followed by another hour in a 4x4, this last part of the journey took us deep into the Pantanal area so we began to see a bit of wildlife. The back of the jeep soon got very excited when Valentina directed everyone's attention to what she described as a crocodile up ahead, everyone dived for their cameras, people jostled for position, then as we approached it turned out to be branch of a tree. Shame that, real shame. ... read more

Another early start to get to the Pantanal. We'd covered most of the distance the day before, so we set off really early and arrived at lunch time. The ranch was really nice, and even had a pool with waterfall.....bags were swiftly dumped and i headed straight for it. After that was an all you can eat lunch with tons of steak, all different cuts carved as you liked. Feeling much better we headed to the jetty for a boat trip and to try our hands at Piranha fishing. It started really well, was getting loads of bites, then about 6 Caimen decided to turn up, which scared them all away, so we teased them for a bit, they got their revenge on us the day after..... Only 2 of the group managed to catch one, ... read more

Jen managed to hold it together just long enough to visit an orphanage in Sucre! A few of the group had bought supplies of nappies and shampoo to take to the place which was a church run project managed by volunteers. Jen was impressed at how well the place was run and had fun playing with the babies and toddlers! Afterwards JP dragged GG around yet more shops and markets (lovely handicrafts! Could´ve bought loads!). We said bye to two members of the the group and after a disturbing night on the bog Jen just managed to make the flight to Santa Cruz! Arriving into Santa Cruz it felt like we´d stepped into a totally different place! We weren´t at altititude for the first time in weeks so we could breathe properly again! It was hot ... read more

Much of week 5 for Jen was spent sampling a large number of Bolivian and Brazilian toilets! Many people apparently experience toilet issues when they travel in Bolivia! The only wildlife that Jen saw in the Pantanal (a wetland area the size of France) was a frog which hogged her bog! (See attached picture)... read more

The Pantanal is a big wetland. And I am a big wetland nerd (it is Jeff here, if that wasnt obvious enough). Consequently, the Pantanal was always going to be high on our list of sites to visit in South America. But before we get to our adventures, and in the interest of wetland education, a little background... The background At around 210,000 square kilometres it is the biggest swamp in the world - thats three times the size of Tasmania! The Pantanal is located pretty much in the middle of South America, mostly in western Brazil, however it is so big that vast areas of the wetland also cross the borders into Bolivia and Paraguay. The Pantanal floods on a seasonal basis - each November to March flood waters inundate massive areas of the alluvial ... read more

Got to the border and decided ok this is quite a big place Puerto juan caballero so for 15 000 we get a taxi to go get our stamp, yes stamp done leaving the country the legal way. The whole time the taxi driver was pointing in a direction and mumbling something in spanish.
