Manaus Known as the gateway into the Amazon and deep into it´s heart we had 2 options with regards to getting there. We could take a river boat which was at least 5 - 7 days upstream which was small crowded smelly but apparentaly an experience or a 1 hour flight. As we where very short on time we had to go for the flight or risk missing out on something later. After our first full day in Manaus of looking for different types of tours into the jungle we decided we really needed a fun night out. We were advised by some of the locals the only place to go on a Wednesday night was a small club outside of town. When we turned up we were a little less than impressed outside but when ... read more

The Amazon Well it is safe to say that coming from London not that long ago, we had forgotten what humidity is like. The Amazon is about 80% humidity and we were soaked in sweat just sitting still!!! I guess this could be considered a warm up for our return to Sydney! The trip into the Amazon really was something special. The eco systems are so interesting and the scenery like nothing else. The Amazonian people still live along the river banks in huts and travel around the various rivers by boat. These days they wear western clothes and in some areas, the children attend school. Their lives are very simple though, and there was no sign of TV.... DAY 1 We started our trip into the Amazon from Manaus, where we met the other 2 ... read more

Sept 22 - 26, 2008 This has been a very enjoyable adventure. Getting to my computer to note the days activities was impossible. We were up every morning at 05:30 for a canoe trip into the wilderness before breakfast. After breakfast we followed that with various long walks ( 1 ½ - 2 hours ) through the woods with our expert guides ( at 35 + C ) to learn more about the flora and fauna of the region. Back to the ship for cruising the beautiful river, some very interesting local village visits and very good night canoe trips into the unknown every night after dark to look for wildlife. We particularly enjoyed the night trips as they give you a whole different perspective on the wilderness. Spotting the Caiman, spiders, snakes, etc is amazing ... read more

Sept 21 AMAZONA, Brazil We boarded the river cruiser at the pier at our hotel to start our 6 nights cruising the Rio Nergro River. As you might expect it is very hot here with a “little” humidity ( about 98 % ) Our trip will include 6 nights on the river on the Tucano, which has 18 passengers, two guides, two cooks and a crew of 4. We started in Manaus and will spend 5 days going up stream on the Rio Negro to the Rio Jauaperi River and then come back to and past Manaus to the meeting of the Rio Negro and the Solimoes rivers that become the main Amazon River. Alice and I will miss the actual meeting of the rivers as we will leave the ship one day early to make ... read more

Sept 20, 2008 AMAZONIA, Brazil We are not too sure what to expect with this part of our adventure, but maybe that’s the best part !!! This morning we flew 3 hours to Manaus, a city in the heart of the rain forest on the Rio Negro River about 35 KM from the junction of the Solimoes River that then becomes the Amazon River and dumps into the Atlantic ocean. Or flight took us to Belem for a short stop and we got some great views of the mouth and delta of the Amazon where it dumps into the ocean. WOW !!! This is a serious river ! We spent the afternoon and evening exploring the beach on the Rio Negro and part of Manaus close to the hotel. ( Hotel Tropical - largest 5 star ... read more

I miss Irn-Bru. I miss Fish N Chips. I miss coffee and croissants on a Sunday morning with the paper and a nice warm comfy bed. I miss Lasagna, Wine, Chorizo, and Crisps. I miss Home. Being 8 and a bit months in and swinging in a hammock on a journey seemingly without end, things start to hit home (ah home ´Where everybody knows your name'). On the 14th of September we will have only 100 days left of this Uber voyage of discovery and mosquito bites. That means we have spent almost 257 days away from home (I say almost because there is a weird recurring dream I have about a wedding and a hot tub). And right now we have plenty of time to think about it. Our boat journeys down the Amazon will ... read more

My boyhood dream of traveling down the Rio Amazonas or Amazon River to you and me, has come to and end as it has now been fullfilled (although the Peruvians would have something to say about that which I'll explain later!). We are now in Manaus which lies just 10 km west of where the Rio Negro and Rio Solimoes meet to form the Amazon. The Rio Negro is black; hence the name and the Rio Solimoes is brown and the waters don't mix for several miles downstream. It was a bizzare sight! The trip was everything I didn't expect and more; from marriage proposals to Louise AND myself, to full mobile reception in probably the remotest place I have ever been! We set off early in the morning to pitch our hammocks in a good ... read more

I´m back in Manaus and so many great things have happened I have no idea where to start. First place to start is my amazing guide and friend Elso Lima. If it hadn´t been for this guy I wouldn´t have seen a fraction of the things I´ve seen: I would have put my hand on the pink-toed tarantula that was hiding behind a leaf on the tree I was about to rest my hand on at our base camp in the jungle instead of putting his machete through it: I would have been completely and hopelessly lost in the dazzling mazes of canals and mysterious flooded forests, but Elso always found a way back to the camp by some fundamental guide power, in the dead of night with only a dull flashlight beam, the countless stars ... read more

Amazon 3.0 - The Bicycles of Barcelos, a Four-Minute Photo Essay July 24, 2008, Barcelos, Amazonas, Brasil Note: This blog posting is out of order. When I get to a better internet connection I will get back to the story and photos from the Rio Orinoco. Perhaps bicycles are an odd thing to notice on an Amazon trip. But anyone who has been to Brazilian cities or towns would notice the difference here - very few cars, a few trucks, plenty of motorcycles and scooters, but hundreds of bicycles in this small town. Lucho had noticed them - back on Iguana when I told him I planned to stop in Barcelos on my way to Manaus he said “Everybody there rides bicycles.” They are parked everywhere, leaned against walls of stores and homes and schools and ... read more
