After our unexpectedly long bus ride into Uyuni we were in no rush to wake up in the morning. In the end into was 10amwhen we unhappily surfaced, still shattered from yesterday. We were awake though, showered short after and fed shortly after that. Now our task was to book a tour of the Salar de Uyuni, better known as the Bolivian salt flats, the place where land speed records are smashed and many out of perspective photos are taken. The amount of tour operators on offer in the town is overwhelming and all offer the same package, a 3 day trip observing all kinds of natural wonders. I've no idea how over 80 companies compete for all the tourists offering no difference in tours!? We were very tempted by one company, Crystal Tours, offering us ... read more

The next day, a couple of toilets rolls and three Imodium later, we set off before sunrise again. We'd been told we were going to see five lagoons or high altitude lakes. It seemed a little excessive and to be honest it was. At the first lagoon, the whole group gets out the car and has a walk alongside the lake taking pictures. At the next, a few people stay in the car. The third, no one gets out. A few photos taken with the window down will do fine thank you. Our driver Nelson got the idea, he had a wry full smile. He'd been doing this tour for over ten years. God, he must be bored of lagoons! I was feeling much better by the time we stopped for lunch on some train tracks ... read more

I'm seriously behind on my blogging due to a frantic few days of travelling in mostly remote areas with limited access to the tinterweb so I'll try and keep this post brief so that I can catchup. After returning to La Paz I flew into Uyuni the following morning to see the Salar de Uyuni Salt flats before heading South for Chile. The approach to the airport is well worth the cost of flying alone I think, the scenery here is amazing – a strange lunar desert mix of whites, reds, blues, greens and other colours. Its very surreal. The tour I booked involved a 1.5 day drive around the local area in a 4x4 before a very long and bumpy ride along dirt roads for the transfer to the Bolivia-Chile border. The Uyuni tour started ... read more

Nusipirko... read more

The Bolivian Altiplanostretches out hundreds of kilometres from Uyuni across to the Chilean and Argentinean borders. It’s the real wilderness, no roads, just dirt tracks and a specialist guide required to navigate our way across in our off road truck. Setting out in the morning it’s not long before we leave the town behind and are on the dirt tracks that lead across the altiplano. The two day journey was pretty cool – amazingly spectacular scenery, bumpy and hot driving during the day and chilly with a massive thunder storm at night. Wild and remote, the landscape is a barren semi desert, totally impressive though as the open plains are dotted by streams and lakes of vivid colours (due to the high mineral content of the water), the volcanic peaks of the Bolivian Andes are ever ... read more

From La Paz we headed further into Bolivia to the town of Potosi – the world’s highest city. Here if you want to you can take a visit deep into the silver and tin mines that the town is famous for. I chose not to for various reasons – the rumours of child labour, the environmental impact of letting tourists buy (and use) dynamite, the exposure to asbestos and silica dust…… - whilst I’ve come away to experience all that south America has to offer I doubt my trip will be any the less richer for not spending a few hours in the mine. I chose instead to wander the streets of Potosi, every other turning led to another brightly coloured market and I had a happy day, wandering in and out of the stalls, replacing ... read more

Lake Titicaca, apparently the world's highest navigable lake, is not the only unique natural sight Bolivia has (though technically only half of it is Bolivia´s, and according to Peru it´s the ´caca´ half..). As it has lost all its coastal areas in disputes with its neighbours over time, Bolivia is completely landlocked and the continent´s highest, most isolated and most rugged country. To quote our guidebook, it's landscape is one of extremes - Bolivia has some of the warmest, coldest, windiest, driest, saltiest and swampiest areas of the world. A tour through the Salar de Uyuni and the surrounding dessert and national park area provides some good views on the uniqueness of this country. It was this tour that had made us decide to include Bolivia on our itinerary... Stephen had been very keen on the ... read more

After travelling across the border of Peru into Bolivia via Copacabana, I arrived in La Paz (the highest capital city in the world). I booked up my jeep tour and got chatting to a guy from Lloyds (no.10!!) he was just about to leave on the overnight bus to Uyuni, i was on the flight so got to have a nights sleep in a bed. As i went through security i got pulled aside, "do you have a tool in your hand luggage lady?".... i pulled out my tweezers, confused!! "anything else"..... mmmm.. oh the words of Al Willis' warning ringing in my head, i had left my Leatherman in my bag, several knives and a tool belt combined!!! Checked in my hand luggage and by 7.30am i was in Uyuni where the jeep tours leave ... read more

After our recharging trip down to the Amazon (warmth and low altitude) we were ready to head back up into the cold, high altitude corner of South Western Bolivia. From La Paz, we had booked an 11hr bus to Uyuni , but unfortunately (or fortunately!!) the bus was cancelled and there are no other busses running that day. Our travel agent then suggested a flight that was only slightly more expensive than the bus. SCORE, a 1h40min flight instead of an 11hr bus trip on dodgy dirt roads! Or, so we thought. It was only after we had paid, that the lady told us to make sure we go to the military airport and not the International airport. GREAT, we had just booked and paid for a Bolivian Military flight, which didn’t sound all too exciting ... read more
