We spent two and half weeks in this landlocked rugged country, predominantly in the mountains high on the altiplano. Bolivia has a population of about 9 million, 60% indigenous and poor, and an indigenous president. It’s landscapes include stunning volcanoes, mountain peaks, moonscapes, lakes, flamingoes and salt flats. We suffered with altitude sickness as we spent time in altitudes of 3500-5000 metres. We have a love/hate relationship with this somewhat backward country- although it has the most awesome sights and vistas, Bolivia is old fashioned (which can be a positive) and not really geared to tourist services. Everything is so slow (especially internet!) and services are poor eg feeding becomes a hassle when you asked are to wait 5 minutes and it turns into 30 minutes for a bowl of chicken soup! Once in Uyuni the four of us settled into a nice little hostel, The name of which I cannot remember, and firstly set out for some food. We found a nice pizzeria and and a beer or two and settled in for the night. The following day would be spent finding an agency for the day after. We had heard that an agency can make or break a trip to Salar de Uyuni (Salt Flats of Uyuni) so we made sure we would find a decent one. I think we must have gone through nearly every agency before we made our decision. We found a nice lady called Andrea in her agency who offered a great trip, lots of food, there would be no more than 6 people on the trip and we would definately be ... read more

Buenos!

So with Christmas looming I went to Uyuni to book myself on a Salt flats tour. This meant travelling by another crowded bolivian bus for 7 h on unpaved roads - for a large part of the trip the road was so bumpy the windows were continually rattling. Due to the late departure of the bus I arrived at Uyuni at midnight so after no answer at the HI hostel went with a group of brazillians to another one close by and went straight to bed. The next morning I booked myself on a tour and then before it started went off to buy some chocolate and wine in preparation for Christmas day. For the next few days I would be travelling through some spectacular scenery in a Four Wheel Drive. I met my travel companions ... read more

Hola Amigos, From the Witches Market in La Paz through the largest salt desert on Earth and finally into civilisation again in Chile. Big week for us. Leaving La Paz was tougher than we thought. It´s a friendly place despite its reputation to the contrary and tourists are treated better than in any other big city we´d been to so far. We left a few travelling comrades behind to party over the Christmas period preffering to spend what little we have exploring the place instead. First to Potosi. Potosi Potosi was once the richest city on Earth thanks to the abundance of silver in the nearby mountains. Cerro Rico was the richest in silver and fuelled the Spanish economy for more than two hundred years after the conquistadors took control in the mid 1500s. The Spaniards ... read more

Stunden ... read more

We had another good nights sleep apart from the sudden turning on of the lights at 1am to wake everyone up for a toilet stop (what if you don’t need a wee?!) We arrived early into Potosi, a cold wet and high Potosi (the world’s highest city in fact!) Still feeling a little sleepy we got a taxi to the main square and then promptly got one back to the bus station as we realized nothing was open at 6.00am and more to the point had no plans of actually staying in Potosi. We waited for a coffee shop to open at 7.30am and had some breaki and some warming drinks and then booked our bus ticket out of Potosi leaving at 10am. The bus ride was the bumpiest ride I have ever been on in ... read more

From Potosi I went to Sucre and stayed there two nights. It is three hours from Potosi by bus and a very nice town with crisp white buildings. It is funny because I noticed the confidence of the people. They are proud of their town. Usually when I search for a place to stay I look in my guidebook and pick one where I want to go. This time there was no place that responded to my interest. So when I was at the busterminal I asked the taxidriver to drop me off in the center of the city. The first place I visited was not so nice so I decided to continue my search. After a while I met the two Germans again who I have met before in Potosi and they said their place ... read more
