South America » Chile » Valparaíso Region » Valparaíso January 2nd 2010

After a night in San Padro de Atacama I got a 24h bus down to Valparaiso. I started to really notice the difference with Chile (one of the richest coutries in South America) and Bolivia ( the poorest country in South America) comfortable buses, paved roads and generally much more westernised. I arrived in Valparaiso the next day and set about exploring the city. I really liked Valparaiso with its multi-coloured houses, street artists, artisan shops and funicular trains (for getting up the many steep hills). As well as generally wondering round and taking in the atmosphere I went on a boat round the port and drank lots of espresso in the coffee shops (before coming to South America I was under the misconception that the coffee here would be good but they seem to have ... read more

So with Christmas looming I went to Uyuni to book myself on a Salt flats tour. This meant travelling by another crowded bolivian bus for 7 h on unpaved roads - for a large part of the trip the road was so bumpy the windows were continually rattling. Due to the late departure of the bus I arrived at Uyuni at midnight so after no answer at the HI hostel went with a group of brazillians to another one close by and went straight to bed. The next morning I booked myself on a tour and then before it started went off to buy some chocolate and wine in preparation for Christmas day. For the next few days I would be travelling through some spectacular scenery in a Four Wheel Drive. I met my travel companions ... read more

South America December 24th 2009

So I after the jungle I headed straight to Sucre a very pretty colonial town in Bolivia. I spent a couple of days wandering around the town admiring all the white buildings and relaxing in the park and then I went to Potosi - the highest city in the world (4090m)! Potosi was founded in 1545 after the discovery of silver ore deposits in the mountain Cerro Rico. The main industry here is still mining although the silver is now great depleted and the ore now contains only 2% silver and 10% other minerals. With the mines being the main attraction I went to visit one -they are still working mines and so our first stop was at the miners market to buy gifts for the miners of dynamite, fizzy drinks and coca leaves. Then we ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Beni Department » Rurrenabaque December 19th 2009

So having skipped the jungle in Ecuador and Peru I finally made it there in Bolivia. The intention was to avoid the 18h bus journey and fly there but due to the rain and the fact that the landing strip in Rurrenabaque is just a field, therefore rendered useless in the rain, I was forced to take the bus. The road was reminiscent of the "Death Road" I'd just cycled and it was quite scary when the bus had to reverse along the side of a huge drop inorder to let other vehicles past (which was fairly often), nevertheless we safely arrived in Rurrenbaque in the pouring rain. We decided to take a day to look round the town and recover from the bus journey before we ventured into the Pampas and the Jungle. After an ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz December 11th 2009

I arrived in La Paz on the weekend of the elections to find out that it was a no alcohol weekend - as La Paz as a reputation as a party town this meant that there were alot of disappointed people. On Sunday, the day of the election, the city was dead - a complete contrast to normal when the streets are filled with traffic and market stalls. It was nice to wonder round the city whilst it was quiet and then in the evening we went to Plaza de Murrillo where the celebrations of the reelection of Evo Morales were going on. There were lots of flags being waved and a couple of bands played whilst we waited for Morales speech. There was a great atmosphere. I spent a couple of days visiting the museums ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca December 6th 2009

After Arequipa I headed for Puno to see Lake Titicaca and the floating islands. The floating islands are the homes of the Uros which they make entirely from reeds. Traditionally the Uros made their living from fishing and nowadays they supplement this with tourism. We were shown their homes, which are also made from reeds, and how they made the island by tying the blocks of reeds together. I also go ride in one of their reed canoes. It was then time to leave Peru and head into Bolivia. The border crossing was easy enough and I was soon in Copacobana - a small town on the edge of lake Titicaca. I met a couple of Austrailians and a couple of Belgiums on the bus and after a lunch of fresh trout at the market we ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu November 17th 2009

After the long bus journey I relaxed in Cusco for a couple of days before starting the Inca trail (the only thing I've booked apart from my flights. It was great just wondering around Cusco looking at all the colonial buildings (some of the buildings were built on top of Inca ruins) although I had to fend off all the women offering "massage, manicure, pedicure". For the Inca trail there were only 10 of us in our group although there were also 2 guides, 15 porters and 2 cooks! The first morning we set off to the Sacred Valley to get a taster of the Inca ruins to come. The first stop was a local village where we learnt a bit about the indigenous culture and then we went to see the Inca constructions in Pisaq ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima November 9th 2009

After the quiet of the mountains I arrived in Lima to a cacophony of honking horns! I spent a day looking around the city centre visiting San Francisco monastry (where we got a tour of the catacombs), the cathedral Museum of the Congress and Old Tribunal of Inquisition and Museo del Banco Central de Reserva. I had my first try of ceviche in Peru - Mmmm spicier than I thought it would be. So the next morning I left the hustle and bustle of Lima and headed to Huacachina. After a 5h bus journey and a short taxi trip I arrived at Huacachina which I discovered was a little oasis surrounded by huge sand dunes and as a bonus my hostel had a pool! It was also at the edge of one of the sand dunes ... read more

South America » Peru November 3rd 2009

After two nights of bus journeys I arrived in Huaraz at 6am in the morning. After a days rest it was time to stretch my legs and get hiking amongst the spectacular mountains in the Cordilleras Blanca. At 6 am I was picked up from my hostel ready for the long bus journey to the start of the Santa Cruz trek. We stopped off for breakfast before heading up into the mountains. The weather was glorious (we were especially lucky considering its the rainy season at the moment) bright blue skies and most of the mountains were completely clear of clouds. We were all very snap happy asking our driver to continually stop afraid the sky would suddenly cloud over. We passed lots of snowy peaks (many are over 6000m) offset against the blue sky and ... read more

South America » Ecuador » South » Cuenca October 30th 2009

I left Quito for Baños, a small town known for its thermal baths. On the first day I cycled along the Pastaza and Verde rivers (the ruta de las cascadas), a route that took us past a number of waterfalls. We took a small basket cable car to the Velo de Novia waterfall - there was only going to be two of us in the cable car until about 5 locals crowded in at the last minute. The most spectacular waterfall was the Pailón del Diablo, which on crawling through a thin passageway in the rocks we could walk behind. That evening I relaxed in the thermal baths. The next day on my way to a rafting trip I caught my first view of guinea pigs cooking (I still havn't tried them - didn't really fancy ... read more
