Lake Titicaca-Isla del Sol February 22-25, 2007 Early morning we headed to the beach to get a boat to transport us to the famous Isla del Sol situated at about two hours from Copacabana. After buying our one-way ticket on a wooden boat filled with locals and travellers, we started our navigation on Lake Titicaca. Sitting outside on a bench and feeling the wind and sun against my face, I truly enjoyed being on this immense lake and hearing the water splashes along the boat. From the boat, I got an interesting perspective of the different settlements found on the numerous islands of Lake Titicaca. Due to the steep terrain, people have to cultivate on the mountains and therefore, the land is leveled and organized for every type of grains, vegetables and fruits. This peculiar landscape ... read more

Bussi kohti Copacabanaa lähti kahdeksan kieppeissä aamulla. Maisemat matkalla olivat todella upeat. Titicaca-järvi on n. 3 800 metrin korkeudessa... read more

New Year's on the Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun/Sun Island) sounds a little Club Med at first but it is nothing at all like that. Inca legend has it that the sun was born here and the first Incas appeared from a rock at the northern end of the island. I spent New Year's Eve and part of New Year's Day on this island, rising from the bluest lake I've ever seen, Lago Titicaca, which sits at high altitude straddling the border between Peru and Bolivia. I wish I had pictures....but I don't. Trust me, it is bluer than you can imagine!! The sky above the lake is wide open, with views in every direction from the island's terraced hills. Aymara women, in colorful skirts and shawls draped over their shoulders, sit on the ... read more

After a six hour bus journey from La Paz just before the Peruvian border is Lake Titicaca (The Lake also extends into Peru). This is yet another contrast to Bolivia. According to ancient legend the sun was born here and the Inca’s believe there first emperor rose from the rock of Titicaca (The Rock of Puma). Llamas were slaughtered in ceremonies in front of the sacred rock where they were cut at the breast and their blood offered to the gods. At over 230km long and 97km wide the Lake is at 3820m above sea level and is one of the world’s highest lakes. We visited the Isla Del Sol (island of the sun) which is on the lake; there is also Ísla Del Luna (island of the moon) where apparently they housed the virgins of ... read more

Early in the week, I decided that I was going to go away on the weekend because I really felt the urge to travel. My destination for this weekend: Copacabana (not the famous one in Brazil that there is a song about) and Isla del Sol on Lake Titicaca. Feels strange to be going back to Lake Titicaca considering I was last there in May of 2005 on the Peruvian side. I never thought I would be back in this part of the world so quickly. I invited my friend Kevin along for the trip, however when I called him Friday night to invite him, he was at his company's Christmas party and as I found out Saturday morning before 7AM that they only thing he remembered was that I called, not the fact that I ... read more

After inly 2 days in Peru, I cross the border and enter in Bolivia. There is no bank in Copacabana but I manage to change some Chilean pesos and pay for a boat ticket for Isla del Sol where I want to spend a night. Before boarding, I have some time to wander around Copacabana, its famous church and above all its numerous shops. There's a lot to buy and it's even cheaper than in Peru! I see some people gathered on the main square, it's a hunger strike. It seems they're against a reform of the president Morales who wants to bypass the current laws in order to impose his agenda. Bolivia seems to be going through a lot of pressure and there have been many demonstrations from the opposition especially in the richer ... read more

Took a boat from Copacabana to the Isla del Sol. Pretty place. When you first arrive you have to hike up the Inca stairs which was brutal with an 80 lbs pack. Took like 45 minutes. We stayed at a hostel on the crest of the island and did a full day hike around the northern part the next day. We visited the Inca Labyrinth and the Sacrificial Alter. The island has beautiful hiking. The next day we went around the southern tip and visited some more ruins. Life on the Island is pretty traditional and there are lots of animals. Kids have been trained to charge for their photos which I can understand but they think that this applies to random livestock as well. Got into a couple of arguments with 5 year olds. When ... read more

Well, after the horrific times of food poisoning in Coroico the tummy seems to be on the mend just about. The final day in Coroico was madness really as i think i was the only person in town to be sober at the end. Many brightly coloured (though muddied) bandsmen had got lost from their groups and wandered the streets in drunken stupors. One trombone player i met stared blankly at me as he silently motioned his instrument, for all the world still playing along in one of the parades rather than proped against an alley wall with crossed eyes. The electricity and water supply to the town was long gone and noboby seemed to have sobered up to realise yet. Music continued as we left on our minivan to La Paz distantly in our ears, ... read more

Due to the fact that my peruvian visa had already expired for more than 2 weeks (I got only 2 month) I continued directly from Arequipa to Bolivia. Reaching the amazing lake Titicaca on 3000m I crossed the bolivian border to reach a little town called Copacapana, situated at the bolivian part of lake Titicaca. Copacapana is the gate to the Isla del Sol - the Sun Island. The Sun Island is the mythological origin of the incas. Here the original incas came down directly from the sun to start their march into today's Peru and founding Cusco as the capital of their huge empire to come... I took a boat to the north of the island and I was instantly overwhelmed by the beauty of this incredible place. The view was so fantastic and if ... read more

English Morning boat to the Sun Island. I met a deutch couple with whom I will stay for a week. Island with great views and quite high. Small trek to the north part but we ended lost and after 3 hours of walking decided to come back through an alternative path. We end up taking a ... read more
