I arrived in Copacabana from La Paz having no expectation and about $12 to my name (in Bolivianos) because I thought I was headed straight for Peru. Well, like one artesano put it, I got trapped in Copacabana for two reasons. The first is that I liked it there, and the second is that I had to wait for the bank to open because there is no ATM in Copacabana. Copacabana lies on the shore of Lake Titicaca, and the altitude is high enough to make me woozy anytime I needed to walk up stairs or a hill or something. I spent a lazy few days wandering around the touristy town, drinking beer and eating trout along the shore, and hanging out with an awesome Argentinian called Veronica. I decided to join Veronica on her ... read more

According to legend the Inca Empire began on the Isla Del Sol (´Island of the sun´, altitude 3810m above sea level). Although when you visit the Island you find it hard to believe as there is not much there. There is one impressive Inca ruin, a sort of labyrinth, and a ceremonial table, but the rest of the island is really very barren, but the views and surrounding scenery is spectacular. I caught the slowest boat in the world (!) for the 1.5 hour trip from Copacabana to the northern tip of the island. I checked out the ruins there and then started the 3.5 hour walk accross the island to Yuamani at the South end of the Island. On the boat I met another UK lad, a Swede and a Frenchman and we did ... read more

Bolivia border crossing! Thankfully after the Peruvian border crossing the crossing from Peru to Bolivia was lot easier and had no hassle at all and probably the best border crossing on the whole trip it was literally door to door service! We got a bus direct from Puno to Copacabana, Bolivia all for 3 pound and took 4 hours. There were only fellow travellers and most of them posh British youngsters, a group of about 10 travelling together on a break from Uni for a month and you could tell as very naïve and not really prepared for South American travel! They were dressed like they were in Spain for a few weeks and expected the locals to speak English, so found it frustrating trying to get anything done! Very funny for me to watch but ... read more

Country number 10 was one we were both looking forward to - hoping it would have the same charm as Peru without all the "bloody Inca Trailers" and touristy add-ons - so after an early start we boarded a bus whose maiden journey had probably been in about 1978 and headed off to Bolivia. The border crossing was typically unorganised and bizarre - Peruvian officials wearing 'Anti Droga' uniforms "stormed" our bus and searched every bag on board, no doubt hoping to keep all Peru's precious drugs within their own country and not shared with Bolivia. We then got our passports stamped in a mud hut before walking the 200 metres through 'no mans land' where we lost an hour of lives and arrived a little confused in Bolivia. After more passport stamping in a much ... read more

Untitled May - losing track of the dates here. Around the 20-25 time frame. hey everyone! It's been a while I know....I've been in the very remote southwest corner of bolivia and then actually came down sick for about 5 days, finally have recovered! so expect some catching up on the blog. I{m now in Bolivia. And there are apparently no apostrophes on this keyboard. So, when leaving Cuzco I decided to take a *tourist bus* to Puno, right on the border. Not something I would usually do, for reasons including the fact that it costs much more than public buses, but it stopped at some sights along th way like Pre-Inca ruins *of which there aren{t many* and included a *traditional* lunch. There are no quote marks either, that I can find, so bear with ... read more

We waited. And waited. And waited. Finally the bible group was ready to go. Decked out in the latest in tourist merchandise and speaking loudly with their terrible spanish, my two Argentine friends and I rolled our eyes. It was going to be a long boat ride and we were already almost an hour late. The small ferry chugged along slower than a game of cricket. Apparently there is a gentlemans agreement amongst all the fisherman that no one is to get a faster boat and instead subject tourists to the equivalent of deep sea water torture. The slow pace enhanced the risk of frost bite and we tried to bundle up against the cold. We were headed to Isla Del Sol, Island of the Sun. It was freezing and about to rain. After several ... read more

Rock me on the Water South America » Bolivia » Isla del Sol By Elmo AbbeyMay 12th 2007Abbey ElliottWere now in Bolivia living the high life without 2 pikey boys following us round! hahaaha only joking really, miss you boys!!! Our first port of call was Copacabana on Lake Titicaca where we stayed in a nice hotel over looking the bay. We managed to get the cheapest room which had the communal lounge and kitchen next to it, (at last we could do some cooking!!!). Little did we know that we would be getting a visit from the Virgin Mary. We took a day trip to the Isla del Sol which was well worth it!! ... read more

I had been in Cusco or the surrounding area for 2 weeks, so it was time to move on. I was intending to go to Puno, on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca, but as I was a few days behind plan, I decided to take a night bus straight to Copacabana on the Bolivian side of the lake. Whilst I slept on the bus, backpack on my lap, someone managed to take a fiddle inside and sneak my camera, along with all electrical accessories, out of the bag. I was woken up as the guy sat next to me hurried off the bus at an unscheduled stop. Within a minute or so I noticed my stuff had gone. Now, I think I took the theft of my iPod rather philosophically, but I was nowhere near ... read more

Temple on Isla Del Sol

Lake Titticaca, Bolivia. When you are first introduced to South America´s second largest lake, it is not difficult to get consumed by the magic and mystic of the area. The lake´s main island, Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun), with deep, pristine blue waters that stretch as far as the eye can see, traditional villages with scarce electricity supply and ancient ruins, is a place of true and tranquil beauty. Ancient civilisations (extending to many modern peoples of Peru and Bolivia) believed this to be the birthplace of the sun and the moon, the bearded white leader / deity Viracocha and the first Incas, Manco Capac and his wife / sister Mama Ocllo. Legends are abound here, including tales of lost treaures and entire cities submerged beneath the lake´s surface. As a tourist destination ... read more
