We knew the hostel had breakfast (which we have figured out is worth about $3 per person when comparing a hostel that has it to a hostel that doesn´t). But we had no idea the breakfast would be this amazing. Toast, yogurt, cereal, coffee, tea, cookies, JUICE!, the works. We have learned that when a hostel gives you breakfast, take all that you can. So after stuffing ourselves, we wrapped up the remaining toast and cookies and headed to the 8:00 am bus. The bus, a large coach type of bus, led us East. We checked out of Chile at the boarder, drove a few kilometers, and checked in to Argentina. No cost! About 3 hours in to the bus ride, it got very hot and the driver didn´t feel like opening the windows or anything ... read more

El Chalten is 3 hours north of El Calafate by bus and is at the entrance to the northern sector of Parque National Los Glaciares. It’s a lovely little town and is full of tourists hiking the surrounding mountain ranges including the Fitz Roy. I got the afternoon bus with Christian and Zoe from England whom I met at the Glacier the day before and were on a three month trip of South America. We arrived in El Chalten around 6pm and had a quick stop in the Park Rangers office to get a talk on the hiking trails that were available. I was staying at a different hostel so we arranged to meet at the La Cerveceria Pub and Restro-a German style bar for some local microbrew beer before heading to a magnificent restaurant in ... read more

The flight from Buenos Aires to El Calafate took 3 ½ hours with Aerolineas. The flight on 29thFebruary was at 7am so it was an early start with my Nokia alarm set for 5am. I bumped into quite a few people coming back from their night out on the way to the shared bathroom and I was glad I’d caught an early night and just watched Clint Eastwood’s new film Hoover on DVD. The taxi picked me up at 5.30am and it was starting to get light outside as we headed to the Ezeiza airport. The domestic terminal was quite busy with other flights going to Cordoba, Mendoza and Iguacu. I arrived around 10.30am and the airport is quite small so getting onto the shuttle bus and to the hostel America Del Sur took around 40 ... read more

Met the group on the Gap trip in Buenos Aires, mixed group, 3 couples and a couple of solo travelers, and my room mate Erik from the US, he at 31 is the baby of the group. Flew down from Buenos Aries to Bariloche a nice little holiday town, also one of the most popular ski resorts in Argentina Lots of lakes, mountains and great views Patagonia a big farming area, many farms (estancias in spanish) are thousands of hectares, the land is pretty rough, they have mainly sheep and red Hereford cattle Lots of meat grill restaurants in Argentina, had some very nice venison and steak. The Argentinians like to have the meat cokked through and not red inside, which suites me fine... read more

So where to next???? Short bus ride up the road from El Calafate and we were in the hiking capital of Patagonia.....El Chalten. Framed by 2 huge mountains Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy both over 3000 metres tall, its Argentina's Torres Del Paine equivalent. Mountain climbers flock here and word was, and sighting proved, that famous Austrian climbers were in town, waiting for the winds to drop and the weather to improve in order to attempt the infamous Cerro Fitz Roy, who takes no prisoners- many who try don't make it down...... The thing we were most looking forward to...... Its all free!! Every other park we've been into we've had to pay 100 Pesos per day EACH!!! that's £17!!!! What was really lovely as well was before the bus dropped you off, they took ... read more
