Patagonia is breathtaking.Good luck with weather. I might have traded in some Spanish for Italian and Portuguese (portañol) trying to converse with other tourists. Lost in Los antiguos but I'm trying to make my way to Chile today.... read more

Keeping in the national park theme from the Torres del Paine we headed next to the Parque Nacional Los Glaciers. The town of El Calafate sits at the southern edge of the park and it’s here that we base ourselves in a hostel for a couple of days to explore. Los Glaciers National Park is said to be home to some of the most spectacular scenery in all of Argentina, if not South America, well whoever said that isn’t wrong, its classic coffee-table book Patagonia, you’re surrounded by deep blue skies that go on forever, rising up from the horizon in every direction you look are magnificent mountains, incredible glaciers, glistening lakes and thick lush forests. From El Calafate we headed out to the southern reaches of the park to explore the Perito Moreno Glacier, it’s ... read more

After an amazingly fun Christmas in Bariloche it was time to head south to see in the New Year in Ushuaia. Ushuaia lies just over 1500 kilometres from Bariloche, so its 4 days of driving, 2 border crossings and a ferry to catch across the Magellan straights to reach our next stop, so with a quick goodbye to the staff at Los Coihunes we get an early start to hit the road… Whilst its summer over here and we’re essentially chasing the sun for most of my trip as we head south we’re heading into colder territory. Ushuaia has an average temp this time of year of 10’C…. So it’s away with the shorts and vest tops, and on with the thermals, lots of layers and sitting on the truck covered in blankets, just as we’re ... read more

El Chalten is a mere two hours drive north of El Calafate. It’s a 220km away on a nice paved road as we have to go around Lago Argentino. El Chalten is a new town, dating back to 1985 and erected by the Argentinian for a sole border claim with Chile. If you didn’t know, border issues in the region are still pretty hot, let it be with Chile, Bolivia, Argentina and even Peru…pretty often, for 200 years old issues! There is only one fame to El Chalten today, and this is to be the trekking capital of Patagonia. Just behind the little town is the Cerro Torre and the Fitz Roy mountains….so it’s not only trekking, it’s also a serious mountain climbers paradise. The Fitz Roy is over 3400 meters, and a pretty serious climb…well….if ... read more

We've reached the southern point of our two weeks Patagonian Odyssey...we've reached El Calafate. But first, there was the road from Menelik to El Calafate...some 480km with few gravels kms on the way. I did get 10 extra liters of nafta (fuel) from the Estancia Menelik at a serious premium, but that was what it was...long journey, without a single petrol station on the way. First, 80km on gravels...went smoothly, we left early...life was good... Than 40km on a proper road...nice....than it came...180km on gravels. Sometimes it's fun, when the gravels looks like stones, I don't really like it anymore! It went mainly smoothly...thinking that pretty soon, we are already doing this road one more time, on our way up. The gravels road finished at Tres Lagos...and 2km from Tres Lagos, I found a flooded track. ... read more

The place has only electricity from 8pm to 11pm by generator....the wind is blowing madly 24 hours a day, and still we fall in love with Menelik. Menelik is an estancia at the door of the Perito Moreno National Park. It has nothing to do with the Glacier which is a good 450km south of here. The Perito Moreno National Park is one of these "lost" parks...it's just 90km away from Ruta 40, at the end of a gravel track. Imagine, the closest petrol station from Menelik is a short 200km! So after Los Toldos, here is Menelik where we stay for 2 nights. The car need a rest...the driver too....and obviously Leslie and Tiffany can do with more fresh air...outside the car. We shared our stay and dinner the first night with three photographers from ... read more

We haven’t reached the end of the world, aka “La fin del Mundo” in Ushuaia, but trust me, this place feels much more remote than Ushuaia does. Once we left Esquel north of us, it’s on for a land where men are pretty rare. Most tourists will hop on and off of planes to Bariloche, El Calafate or even Ushuaia. Then you’ve got the more courageous, who are taking busses in between each point of interest. But by doing so, you lose all the fun of getting alone in the middle of nowhere. Ideal was to rent a 4x4 to go around…but trust me, prices are steep. I went for the “crazy” option of renting the cheaper car Avis had. Made sure to let them know ahead we were heading 1500++km south….took the insurance, and we’ll ... read more

Ben and I shouldered our packs as the boys drove out of town under a beautiful patagonian sky. Our destination was Vivac de Polacos in the Torre valley at the base of St. Exupery the spire we planned to climb. The trail to Laguna Torre is well traveled and we saw many people on our way in all intrigued by our packs and where we were headed. Once you get to the lake the trail turns into a climbers access only trail immediately. A tyrolean traverse across the Rio Fitzroy is the only way to access the far side of the lake where we needed to be, eventually the trail dumps you out on a lateral moraine of the Torre Glacier the stretches up valley as far as you can see, the majestic Cerro Torre towering ... read more

Well Folks it has been awhile since our last update so we have lots to tell about our latest travels. After leaving Coyhaique we were driven with the common goal to head south to see more mountains. We started south the day after getting out of the Castillo range, leaving behind dark sky and unforgiving rain. Or at least that is what we thought we were doing. To continue south our route traversed us across Chile into Argentina. As soon as we entered Argentina we encountered the strongest wind any of us had ever experienced. The wind reminded us of the storms on the Oregon Coast during winter when foam from the ocean gets blown up onto the roads and houses. We drove and we drove. As we went south the terrain grew more and more ... read more

Calafate sits on the edge of Argentina 's largest lake 1600 sq kilometre of milky blue glacier water, as our bus drove past the lake we could see icebergs floating in the lake. Our main reason here is to visit the glacier Perito Moreno which is a couple of hours by coach away from Calafate and to travel onto El Chaltèn to see the mountain Fitz Roy. We took the coach to the glacier, first it stopped at the glacier to allow those people who wanted to spend all their time on the walk ways in front of the glacier face, though we did have a chance to get a quick glimpse of this huge light blue glacier which creaked and groaned on occasions, as we stood there transfixed by its size and beauty. We then ... read more
