After visiting the Argentinian side of Iguazu falls myself and Will, a guy from Dublin I'd crossed paths with a few times in Brazil, left Josh and took a bus to Buenos Aires just in time for St. Patrick's day. On arrival we bumped into a few of the guys I'd stayed with in Rio so we all headed out to watch some Six Nations and drink some green beers. The whole world celebrates St Paddy's but Buenos Aires takes it especially seriously. Whole streets in the centre were full of Guinness drinking Argentinians in a party of almost Carnival like proportions. Nightlife in BA is pretty hardcore, no one seems to head out until about 3am and to head home until nearly lunchtime. Being Irish for a day had it's advantages as I quickly realised ... read more

Our journey back from Ushuaia to El Calafate again started with an early departure time. This one slightly less ugly than the one that brought us here, although not by much. We left at 5am. After grabbing a few hours of precious sleep on this bus, I woke myself up, put on my Ipod and took a look out of the window. After so many bus journeys, you can almost lose the enthusiasm to keep getting on and off buses, however when you have views like the ones out of Ushuaia, you remember why being in a bus for hours on end isn’t all that bad after-all. At times, for as far as the eye can see, your vision is filled with beautiful flat land plains that seem to go on forever, the only distraction being ... read more

Ok, this is going to be big. I've got a week's worth of stuff to write about so I'll try to keep it concise. Also I'm dedicating this one to all those who did Geography at school, Mr Lemoine included, as I am now literally THE big dog of seeing glacial features. I was all like "why hello there lateral and terminal morraines forming barriers to the corrie lake or tarn that sits in front of the frost shattered back wall layered with scree deposits". Anyways: The week has been amazing, although the name of this place is slightly decieving in that I have so far not patted any gonias at all. First things first, Monday. This was the day of the visit to the Perito Moreno Glacier, which according to trustworthy sources translates as the ... read more

Since my ankle was still very sore today, I wanted to take it easy and rest it for a day or two. I had given thought to a boat tour on the Lake to some other glaciers, so I went ahead and did it today. It was a nice sized catamaran and full of people. We first went to the Spegazzini Glacier. The day was sunny and beautiful for the most part. The clouds come and go around the mountains, causing it to be dark and overcast one minute, and sunny the next. Also, I wanted to mention the water in the lake. From El Calafate, it looks pretty blue, but it is really a milky-gray-blue color that is so hard to describe. The glaciers bring so much microscopic sediment into the lake that the sediment ... read more

After a hassle free 28 hours of bus trip, we finally arrived at our destination, El Calafate. We were now in the heart of Patagonia and the temperature had definitely changed from the pleasant heat of Bariloche. It was still by no means cold though and in comparison to English winters, you could almost go as far to say that it was mild, however this was the Patagonian summer and could only imagine how cold it would get in their winter. Our hostel was a strange affair, looking more like a ‘Holiday Inn’ than a hostel, placed on the widest, most empty, random road we had ever seen. Donna and I joked that it looked almost like we were on some kind of airport runway rather than a road…turns out, we were right and in fact, ... read more

Oh my heck! This trip just gets better each day. Today was the Big Ice hike on the Perito Moreno Glacier. This is the reason that I am down here in Patagonia. When I start to plan my trips, I pick up tour guide books and come up with very broad strokes of where I want to go and what I would like to see. From there, I purchase air tickets in and out. That gives a good base of what I can do and then I start picking the who, what, when, where and why. Actually, since I travel alone, it isn't so much about the who as it is the other 4. Big Ice was the why and El Calafate, Patagonia was the where. I can honestly say that I had never heard of ... read more

Yesterday was a day full of travel; lots of hurrying, lots of waiting, lots of sitting and wondering what the heck was going on. My taxi driver sent someone else to pick me up today, but she was early and very nice. We left the hotel at 9 and made it to the airport on time. I thought that the travel gods were smiling upon me today- the plane was on time and they checked my 2nd bag for free. It was off to a great start. As we approached Buenos Aires, the cloud cover grew thicker and more ominous. Heck I wasn't worried, I was only there for a couple hours and didn't care if it was raining there; that would be my worry the following week. Oops, my bad. We circled BA for over ... read more

Our time in Buenos Aires has come to a close. We didn´t do a huge amount on our last day, I got my phone sorted finally, we went to a modern art museum and packed for our flight the next day. The flight down was pretty good, they seemed to just give us endless free drinks and we even got a small cardboard box with some biscuity treats inside. Having said this, the champagne oyster consome was sub par and the braised condor was absolute garbage, but over all it was pleasant. The landing seemed a tad speedy. Our descent compared to a normal one is similar to going down a firemans pole compared to a slide. It was all good though and we landed safely in a vast nothingness by a lake. They call it ... read more

Friday the 9th. Departing El Calafate and onwards to El Chalten aka The Trekking Capital of Argentina. A tiny town with something like 600 residents but many more tourists filling the streets, hostels and restuarants. We found ourselves a cozy campsite down by a big, braided river and headed off to get in on the trekking trend. The trailhead to Lago Capri was close the the campsite and we wound up narrow trail for about 2 hours. The whole time Matt was compulsively looking for a Condor as he had heard that they lived near rock outcroppings and that they existed in Argentina. This wasn´t enough info to convice me so I spent more time looking for catapillers and watching kayakers in the river below. Then we came upon two hikers stopped in the middle of ... read more

We caught the 8:15 bus to Glacier National Park. A 1.5 hour ride and a ridiculous price (was about $100 for the bus and park admission) led us to another spectacular site (well worth the money). Probably my favorite part of the trip so far. Perito Moreno Glacier is one of two glaciers in South America that is actually advancing (2 meters per year). And the park has a really cool setup of walkways right across from the glacier. The glacier is massive and so are the walkways. We spent the day trying to find the best spot to watch the glacier calve (pieces of ice break off and crash in to the water). Every couple minutes you would hear a thunderous boom (like a gun shot) and see ripples in the water from the ice ... read more
