Einige Busstunden von Puerto Natales und einen Grenzuebertritt spaeter sind wir in El Calafate. Dieses Staedtchen liegt am suedlichen Ende des Parque Nacional Los Glaciares am Ufer des Lago Argentino und ist Ausgangspunkt zum Perito Moreno Gletscher. Der Gletscher ist seiner Groesse und Lage wegen der wohl bekannteste in ganz Suedamerika. Er ist rund 30 km lang und erstreckt sich ueber einer Breite von rund 5 km in einen Arm des Lago Argentinos. Ab dem Wasserspiegel sind die Eiswaende bis zu 60 Meter hoch. Gleich gegenueber befindet sich eine Halbinsel, weshalb man den Gletscher aus naechster Naehe bewundern kann. Der Gletscher bewegt sich weiter vorwaerts, so kommt es in den letzten Jahren immer wieder vor, dass er bis zur Halbinsel vordringt und den Abfluss des oberen Seeteils blockiert. Wir verbringen einige Stunden beim Gletscher und bestaunen ihn vom Schiff und von der Halbinsel aus. Dank Sonnenschein leuchtet das Eis in allen Blautoenen. Von Zeit zu Zeit loesen sich Eisbloecke und fallen mit lautem Getoese ins Wasser.
A few bus hours from Puerto Natales and another border crossing later we arrive in El Calafate. This small town lies on the shore of Lago Argentino at the southern edge of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. It is the main gateway to one of the highlights of the park, the Perito Moreno glacier. Because of its size and location, this is probably the most famous glacier in South America. It has a length of 30km and ends with a width of 5km over a branch of Lago Argentino, the front wall being up to 60m high. Directly opposite of it lays a peninsula from which it is very easy to admire the glacier. The Perito Moreno glacier is constantly growing and moving forwards. That’s the reason why it happens sometimes that it completely advances up to the peninsula and blocks the channel flow. We spend a few hours admiring the glacier from a ship and from the peninsula. Thanks to the great weather, the ice is shining in various colors from white to dark blue. Every now and then, we can hear and see icebergs falling from the wall.
Cerro Torre und Cerro Fitz Roy
Am noerdlichen Ende des Nationalparks liegt das Dorf El Chalten. El Chalten ist verkehrstechnisch sehr schlecht erschlossen und bietet an Infrastruktur sehr wenig. Wohl deshalb hat es bisher

mit Fitz Roy im Hintergrundseinen Charme als Wandererdestination nicht verloren.
Hier treffen wir auf zahlreiche Wanderer, Trekker und Kletterer, welche zu den legendaeren Gipfeln Cerro Torre und Fitz Roy aufbrechen. Auch wir packen sofort unsere Rucksaecke und ziehen los. Waehrend drei Tagen wandern wir zu den Base Camps und Aussichtspunkten. Dank mehrheitlich gutem Wetter beeindrucken uns diese beiden Berge immer wieder von Neuem.
Nun stehen 2 Tage Busreise vor uns. Wir werden Patagonien verlassen und ueber die Ruta 40 nach Bariloche fahren.
In the northern part of the national park lays a small town named El Chalten. It is a remote place with very basic infrastructure. Thanks to this, it still remains a calm and peaceful place where people come by because of its stunning surroundings and great hiking, trekking and climbing opportunities. The famous summits of Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy are just nearby. Soon after arriving, we pack our equipment and leave. During three days, we are trekking to the two base camps of the summits, make camping over there and enjoy the view points nearby. The weather is still great so that we can admire the mountains various times from different perspectives and with different light.
After El Chalten, we travel north by bus during two complete days. We leave Patagonia over the Ruta 40 and head to Bariloche, our next destination.
