Awake bright and early....... well early! Tent packed away in a none-too neat bundle but fitted into the bag and away by 6.30 am. We set up the gas burners and put the kettle on so at least we would get cooks' treat of 3 cups of coffee. Cereals, yoghurt and some melon amd pears and apples cut up. Alll healthy stuff but we would have liked something different as it was more or less the same every day. We would have been happy to cook something different if there had been time but had been advised this was a 'get up and go brekkie'. On the road by 8.00 am and the weather was becoming much hotter. We stopped for the usual comfort breaks then lunch at San Ignacio de Mini where there were also ... read more

Our last night in Paraty was enjoyable as the town celebrated its birthday – meaning some live music and a very big cake. We got up reasonably early the next day to take a bus to Angra dos Reis, a small port town noticeable only for being very hot and the gateway to Ihla Grande. Josh and I spent five nights in Ihla Grande, a paradise island with excellent beaches (including the stunning Lopes Mendes), good hiking, waterfalls and boat trips (in which we were lucky enough to have dolphins swim alongside us). Every night there were campfires on the beach with street performers and live music. We reluctantly left after a great week, taking a boat back to the mainland and then a bus to Sao Paulo. Sao Paulo is a monster of a city. ... read more

By the light of the full moon, the Garganta del Diablo looked eerie, mythical, surreal. Majestic, terrifying, unforgiving, relentless. Words simply can’t capture the noise, the immensity, the power. Water poured over the edge below, around and beyond us, an incredible stretch of foaming fury that, moments before, had flowed along its course serene and impassive. The travel gods had been good to us that day. Back in January, I’d booked us a couple of days at the Iguazú Falls as a fun place to spend Jo’s 19th birthday which would fall shortly before we began our overland adventure. That our arrival would coincide with the full moon – come to that, that there might even be “moon walks” to the Falls on the nights around each full moon – had not even flitted through my ... read more

Well, today's title refers to all that I have done here so far. At home I am a quiet, stay at home kind of person. I would never dream of zip lining, rappelling, taking a helicopter ride or whatnot, but here all that has changed. If it sounds fun, I am on it like (insert your own metaphor here, this is a family blog.) In other words, the active Jeannie is on the loose here. My driver picked me up at 8 again this morning. We went through immigrations to go to the Bazil side of the Falls. I knew that they were not going to be as extensive as the Argentine side, but I knew I would find some good views and things to do. We were there a half hour before the Park opened, ... read more

Ok, all I can say is this was seriously some of the most fun I have had in years! I will bounce around a little in the order of the story, but please, hang in there because today was so fricken awesome I can barely contain myself. Usually when I travel I am fine just sitting here after the fact, writing my blog; however, today I have the overwhelming urge to pick up the phone and tell everyone about it in person. It was really, truly that fun. But, since my phone doesn't have an international plan and is turned off until I return home, I will have to try to convey my experiences in the written form. And again, this is the truth, I am laying in a hammock on my private screened porch in ... read more

Our bus from Floripa left us on the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls. The hostel we booked was on the Argentinian side, and we soon found out the process of crossing from one side to the other was not a quick one. Somehow we struggled to find the bus stop where the transfer would pick us up. After wandering around for a half hour with our front and back packs on we found it, directly across the street from the bus terminal. Once we arrived to the Brazilian border, we had to get off the bus to receive our exit stamps. After waiting through the line, we had to wait for another transfer bus to pass in order to continue. During this moment I found that I´d lost the ticket stubs and we had to pay ... read more

Novamente na motorvan hj sao 21.55 de 11 marco e aproveito para escrever sobre iguazu... As magnificas cataratas. Aas cataratas estao mais ... read more

Introducing Matt to his first 18 hour bus drive wasn’t something we were looking forward to. We had done a few of these ourselves in the past few months and were therefore almost immune to them, but how would Matt react? Answer…. Like he had been doing them for years. This was a huge bonus as we had several more of these to come over the coming fortnight, and if we was to see everything we wanted to see, these bus journeys were essential and were going to be frequent. On arrival to the small town of Puerto Iguazu we managed to find ourselves a nice little hostel close to the centre of town with a pool and with a room that hosted 5 people. The 5 bed room was a requirement as although at the ... read more

We can see by the lack of responses to our blog, that perhaps our blogs are becoming too boring or maybe, you are all just storing up all the news for when we get home... : ) Another boring day in our lives: We flew up to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. We spent a couple of days here, absorbing the atmosphere of a city comprised of 12 million people (that´s over 1/4 of the population of South Africa). The city abounds with old, well maintained buildings, a lot of them built during the 1900s, when people tried to create a mini-Europe and to show off their wealth. We went on a very different walking tour of the city, with a very dramatic tour guide. We also visited Boca, a suburb claiming to be the ... read more

Day 111 Monday 30th January Our last morning in the fabulous Posadas Urbana Hotel, the best hotel on this trip so far and we really didn’t want to be leaving, but we had a bus ticket in our pocket and needed to be moving on. After breakfast we packed our backpacks once more and went down to the foyer, checked out and said our farewells to the staff. We left a couple of our books with the guy at reception, that we had already read and didn’t want to keep hauling around with us. He seemed thrilled to be getting the books for gratis, especially “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”. Picked up a taxi out the front of the hotel for the long trip to the bus station and we were a bit ... read more
