Hello Party People,
We woke up early as Vick wanted to wash her hair, if she had done it the night before she would have got a bad neck?? (Women, Vick said she didn’t have a hairdryer, so all you women will understand). Also we wanted to cook a pasta salad for the BBQ, Sergio, (our couch surfing host in Chile) wanted to have one today in the mountains, which sounded quite cool.
Once we got downstairs and on the Wi-Fi our terrible day started. Sergio said he was going to be at our hostel at 10:00, however we had a message on whatsapp saying that he couldn’t get through the border until later in the day, so he would let us know what time he would be here. We carried on and cooked up the pasta salad, and took the spare time to load up photos from the last few days. Vick also watch Divergent again as she loved it.
So around 11:00 we get another message saying he will be there at 13:30, then another saying that they had not moved for 3 hours, then one saying that could we
get a bus to Uspallata to meet him. All of this worried the hell out of me, it is so kind of him to offer to pick us up but he has no idea of times, distances, when the pass is open and how long it takes to drive. So now our day has just been a waiting game. It makes it worse to know that we had found two French girls to share an organised tour with last night for about £10 extra each. In hindsight we think we should have done that.
About 1pm Sergio suggested we take a bus to Uspallata, this would save him a round trip of 3 hours, which is fair enough as we were just sitting around. It would also spare the time in order for us all to make the boarder before it closes for the night (the time seems to be unknown to everyone). So this is all very well us hopping on a bus, but this place is 1h30 away in a car with no traffic, also once we got to the bus station (a 30 minute walk) the bus didn’t leave for Uspallata until 15.30, which
means we wouldn’t be there until at least 17.30pm.
We were considering just catching the bus straight to Cordoba (the opposite direction), to start making tracks to Buenos Aires but this ticket costs about £45, and we already have a flight booked from Santiago to BA. Also we would feel terrible that Sergio had spent 10 hours of his day already to come and get us.
Urhhh- a bit of a mess!
So we ended up in Uspallata at 1800 and tried to get hold of Sergio, we looked everywhere for Wi-Fi and eventually found some and found out Sergio had gone home so we were stuck here!!! We asked in about 5 hotels for a room but all were booked up, finally we found a place on hostel world and booked it, it was the most expensive dorm we have ever paid for £11, and it turned out to be the coldest as well!! Once we had it booked we got tickets for the bus the next day and finally relaxed enough to get some dinner.
We got some BBQ in a local restaurant and it was ok I
had beef ribs and Vick had chicken, the wine we had with it was the highlight Malbec wine is amazing!!! We then got a taxi to the hostel, well after he went the wrong way we found it for him!!
The hostel is nice cold but nice, he booked us in and gave me a free whisky while we waited (Vick wanted one but as she was a girl he didn't offer her one HAHA), the room was so cold it was untrue, he asked if we wanted a private room as it was warmer but it was £50 so never an option!! We got into bed straight away to warm up, watched a supernatural then soon enough we were both fast asleep.
Love N&V X
