We drove south from San Juan headed to the Valley de Uco, the largest expanse of vineyards in the country. But before we left we thought it was important to leave an offering for safe travel to one of the many shrines to the Difunta Correa. Hope she takes care of us and the car the rest of the way. Clearly she was on our side as writhing a few miles of the offering we found a stand full of ripe melons and picked one up for later. We traveled south on the renowned Ruta 40 yet again, passing through but not stopping at Mendoza. But the smell of the Sunday asados was over powering so we pulled over and picked up a bag of empanadas and then some grilled beef and chicken and had an ... read more

Suzanne here... We arrived at San Rafael at 6.20am. It was a bit early to try and find somewhere for breakfast so we decided just to stay at the bus station and read. All went well for about an hour or so, when some old guy decided that out of all the deserted seating he needed to sit right by us, and listen to his crappy music on his crappy phone. As I've mentioned a million times, playing sound on your phone speaker is a surefire way to get me to mutter a curse of painful death upon you. The world is loud enough. Use some f*!&ing headphones! After moving, we read a bit more before heading to the hotel about 9am. We'd both slept a little on the bus and didn't feel too bad, but ... read more

4:55 p.m. The new Pope was just declared! Argentinian Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires from the Metropolitan Cathedral, which we visited a couple of days ago. Martin is so excited he has goose bumps. (He has seen the Archbishop many times.) Victor, our Mendoza guide says the new pope is very simple and humble. Of course all the TV stations are covering the story. This afternoon was “compulsory nap” for our late evening at a winery. Indeed needing a nap, I watched TV long enough to see the url=http://abcnews.go.com/International/white-smoke-pope-black-smoke-nope-conclave-smoke/story?id=18719208white smoke. (Who needs Spanish!) Then my nap. Fortunately, I woke up soon enough to wait for a few minutes to watch the announc... read more

Sitting alone in the Nina Cafe last Sunday, I was feeling quite despondent and alone. Every few minutes I would look up from my veggie sandwich and cafe con leche to a wall post on facebook wishing me the best for my 31st birthday. I was in Argentina, in the middle of a very powerful two weeks at Finca La Rosendo, and all I wanted was to be home with my loves spending the day in Carolina. Then things got worse. On Sundays, San Rafael becomes a ghost town. Nothing is open (well, excepting the Nina Cafe of course) and so my afternoon was spent walking up and down the main drag looking for some godforsaken place to call Alejandro, to let him know when to be waiting on the side of the highway to pick ... read more

After a week of not having any contact with the outside world, here I sit in a swanky hotel in San Rafael with the sun streaming in the windows and thoughts of Finca La Rosendo swirling about in my head. To describe the finca after being there only 6 days would take pages and pages. Here and now then, the highlights. Situated about 20 minutes south of San Rafael, tiny little Finca La Rosendo gets lost amongst all the heavy hitters in the region. On the short bus ride to get there, all you see are hectares and hectares (miles dont exist down here, see?) of grapevines. La Rosendo has those too, but they chose to do things a bit differently. For several years now on-again, off-again couple Virginia and Alejandro have accepted WWOOfers to stay ... read more

The way it Started:- I started dreaming about Andes as soon as I reached Argentina for a work assignment and finally got the glimpse after 6 months. It was a 12 hr bus journey that took us to San Rafael from Buenos Aires , a small city beside the red mountains and “green” river. We booked a cab and roamed around” We roamed around Cañon del Atuel .We did some hiking and adventure sports as well like canopying. You can do rafting in summer when the water is more and gushing. I felt good but not great because I was expecting something big, something more something that can take my breath away. Anyways at night we started for Malargue (A sma... read more

Tahlei I’m currently working on a soundtrack for our South American trip, made up of songs that have we have heard countless times while on our travels and songs that define or characterise a particular moment along the way. These include “Yo no se mañana” which made its entrance in our heads in Colombia and has stayed firmly there ever since; “Waka Waka” – not because Shakira is Colombian but because it was redone as a campaign song by a political party in Nazca and subsequently belted from speakers hung out of cars doing laps around the city centre; “Ojos de Cielo” which was our favourite song performed by the folk musicians who entertained us during our 10 year dinner; and “Land Down Under” because it came on at a nightclub in Trujillo on Kyle’s birthday ... read more
