Spent 5 nights in Mendoza and watched the Champions League final there, Barca edged it for me. Visited one of the wineries, La Rural and got very drunk on Malbec, the most famous wine from this region. Starting to gain weight having eaten in "all you can eat" restaurants two nights in a row... the quality and choice of food in these places is amazing. Had my first asado (Arg. BBQ) on a hostel night and met some really fun people, including South African, Scot and Yank Wes (addendum we met up with Wes in Uyuni, La Paz, Copacabana). Aside from eating and drinking myself and Gary visited the main park which is massive and includes a rowing club and football stadium from the 78 World Cup. Also joined up with a some English lads Joe ... read more

Hello Everybody, I finished the last blog when we were leaving Pucon in Chile after the weather worsened. We took a overnight bus all the way up to Santiago de Chile where we were able to avoid a possible five hour wait by jumping on an earlier bus for Mendoza. This journey was very beautiful, winding up through the mighty Andes, snow-capped mountains and pristine lakes. We came out the other side in Argentina and the city of Mendoza - the wine making capital and more importantly 290 days of sun a year! Getting of the bus we were approached by a representative from the hostel that we had planned on staying at, we got in his buggy with a very drunk scot and turned up at our hostel - bar downstairs, free internet and on ... read more

The main reason for coming to Mendoza for me was mountain Aconcagua and the park in which it lies. Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the world outside of Asia, 6962m. At first I wanted to do just some treks in the park, but than I found out that it's possible to climb it without any special technical skills, just with warm enough equipment and 2 weeks of time. Before coming to Mendoza, I even called to insure that the park is open, since I heard it's the end of the season and it might be closed. But after arriving, I found out that it's impossible to climb because of bad and cold weather. On top of the mountain it went down to -45C at night - a little bit too cold for me. Than I ... read more

Arrived in Mendoza at about 8pm. shattered and no collection of hostel touts to meet me. Decided to get a cab to a hostel in the book and checked in. Was given a "bigger" room but still smallest room I´ve ever been in. My bag wouldn´t even fit without being carried over the bunk beds! A Pizza night had been arranged at a sister hostel (there are 3 campo bases), so we were all taken there. Much nicer hostel with pool, but all the pizza was cold. Everyone from my hostel was shattered so we all walked home at 12.30. Terrible night´s sleep due to claustrophobicness, some yank girl screaming and shouting with the light on at 4am and the girl below me crying. Didn´t get up till 11 so had missed breakfast. After a freezing ... read more

Arrived in Mendoza on Sunday morning after a 12 hour trip from Cordoba (see map.) After getting here exhausted, we managed to get a hotel room but had to kill a couple of hours for it to be vacated and cleaned. Nothing was open and this continued throughout the day so the first day in Mendoza was spent wandering around the empty streets and recovering from the bus ride. Got up ready and rearing for an action packed day of biking or possibly rafting on Monday... left the hotel and realised that shops, cafes and all the other stuff we needed was still shut. Being away you forget what day it is but after returning to the hotel with our bag of un-washed laundry we were informed that everything was shut because of the bank hols. ... read more

Hola! As we near the end of our trip, our strongest impression of Argentina is the warmth of the people we have met here. This is epitomized by the usual greeting: a cheek-to-cheek air kiss, often accompanied by an embrace. This greeting is exchanged with both old friends and new acquaintances. We received this greeting from women and men, girls and boys. Traditionally men did not embrace or air kiss each other, but (based on our experiences), this is swiftly changing. Another manifestation of Argentine warmth is the ritual of yerba maté. The ritual centers on a single cup of delicious bitter (and highly caffeinated) tea shared by two or more people by sipping on a shared filtered silver straw ( bombilla). The cup is traditionally a gourd which is filled about three-quarters full with the ... read more

The view at Carlos Pulenta in the morning was even more spectacular than the night before. We went to post our blog but the Internet connection was not working. Breakfast was amazing. On the table was an elaborate spread of freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh fruit medley, toast, jams, café, croissants, yogurt and granola, eggs and bacon. It was beautifully presented and as we sat there overlooking the sun and the gods shining down on our vineyard estate … ah, right, we were guests here … oh well, we can dream, can’t we? Reflecting on our good fortune, Jo-Anne commented, Do we really have to leave here? We decided to go straight to Vina Alicia and skip Dominio del Plata since our entire schedule was based on being at Pulenta Estates, not Carlos Pulenta. We had ... read more

Leaving Santiago The wake-up call came at 5:30AM and we were on the road at 6:50AM. An easy and quick drive to SCL. OK, the older gentleman filling up his car s l o w l y at the Shell station at the airport was a bit tiring. Avis was, as usual, extremely efficient. We used up all our Chilean pesos and put the balance on AMEX. Good to use up the local currency. LAN Chile has the best first class check-in. After getting in the 'regular' line, Bryan asked the attendant if there was another check-in. Of course there is. Please go down to the end of the building and use the Preferrential Check-In. Straight to the end of the building and around the corner. Yes, four agents in a nice, private area. After a ... read more

well after 3 very enjoyable but highly jet lagged days, I have left Buenos Aires to travel around. As it turns out, I have been so impressed with BA that I have decided to return a little earlier to spend 4 days or so there at the end of my trip. I am now in Mendoza which so far I must admit looks pretty ordinary, and apparently is not very exciting. Tomorrow however, I depart in the morning by bus to Santiago via a rather spoectacular trip over the Andes. Bring it on! ... read more
