Visited the Península Valdés in Patagonia, a World Heritage Site nominated in 1999. It is the home to elephant seals, sea lions and southern right whales (but not in season) and we can get a chance to see a wide array of wildlife. We joined a tour with with 3 other people from our hostel, two from NZ and one from Scotland. Along the way, we had to spot for wildlife like guanocos (a specie of llama), patagonia hare, armadillos, road-runners etc etc amidst dry bushes. Someone spotted llamas shortly after we enter the reserve. So happy that I finally get to see llamas (Wee2, I finally found you). One of the ¨KPIs¨ to achieve¨was orca (commonly known as killer whales, the biggest kind of dolphins). They do not come often but it must be a ... read more

The Spanish language has a great word to describe the roads in much of this lovely country - ripio - but more of that later. We flew down to the town of Trelew with Aerolieas the other night in the hope of seeing some wildlife and maybe getting some cooler weather - we got the first but not the latter. Puerto Madryn is the big draw in this area, but muggins´here stayed in Trelew for a few nights as it was closer to the airport. The hotel we stayed in (Touring) had lost much of it´s glory since the days when the first Welsh people came to this part of Argentina in an effort to escape English oppression (and Wales if any of my experiences of the place are anything to go by). This wasn´t necessarily ... read more

Penguins everywhere!!! Over one million!! Absolutely incredible. As far as the eye can see, Punta Tombo is penguin land. The beach was covered. The surrounding area (up to 1Km back from the beach) was covered with penguins and their nests. It was a long day with lots of travelling, but very worthwhile. Felt like we were in the middle of a David Attenborough set!! We stopped just outside Trelaw on the way back for a "traditional" Welsh Tea. There was tea, cakes and photos of Diana Princess of Wales everywhere! It was bizarre!! Next we´re jetting off to El Calafate and the Perito Moreno Glacier..... ... read more

Just call me "Wimpy", because I have successfully fully digested not one, but TWO hamburgers in the past week! As most of you know, I have not eaten beef or pork for about eight or nine years now (see blog titled, "Mandy Eats Meat, Twice!" for a more in depth look into my semi-veg life). After speaking with several people here about the processing of beef versus chicken, I have decided that though my taste buds long for a more feather-laden creature, eating too much of it here may just result in my babies having three arms and a gimpy leg....hormones. Ironically, this is the exact reason I stopped eating beef in the States (hormone regulations are a bit stricter for chickens than for cows back home). As this is the land flowing with milk and ... read more

Hi there to all at home and on the road. Since the last entry Diana and I spent New Year on a small island south of Rio called Isle Grande. Were only going to spend a week there but it was so lovely that ended up 18 night there and then discovered our 60 day visas were due to expire so we hot footed it to Sao Paulo via a quaint seaside town called Parati were there was great music and the best Thai resturant ever. Spent 4 days in Sao Paulo ( the third largest city in the world, 26mill people).then a 6hr bus ride to Curatiba where we had a 4hr train ride thru native Atlantic forest. The last of the kind left in Brasil or Sth America for that matter. The Falls at ... read more

Hello After a good bus journey (with bad films) we arrived in Puerto Madryn, put our tent up and headed off on a bike to find some sealions. Noone told us that it was 100% gravel and sand and would be like near on impossible to move! But we managed to go 17kms there and 17kms back! but when we got there the ranger told us the bad news.... there ís only 1 sealion and hes asleep, the rest are out at sea eating. Puerto Madryn is a lovely seaside town, its the Welsh settlement in Argentina. Its windy like Wales and smells very seaweedy (also like Wales). It has roads named Gwenyth and Davis etc, but its not Wales.. theres no rock! We met a lovely couple from France and went off on an adventure ... read more

The bus took 17 hours mas o menos (more or less) from Bs.As. Martha and I crashed hard (this being the day after the 8 am night out). This first stop in Patagonia for us was on the Atlantic coast. It’s a dry, empty land- like Cabo in Mexico but without mountains. The wind blows almost constantly. It’s not terribly hot. On the beach in P. Madryn hordes of Argentinians cope with the wind. They are ordinary looking- many are overweight just like in the US, but all had their mate paraphernalia (see below). It's a young crowd- teenagers and families. There was not much in P. Madryn to hold our interest, but P. Piramides, in the national park on Peninsula Valdes, enchanted us. It was one of those almost perfect beaches… had a tiny community ... read more

The past couple of days have been spent in Puerto Madryn. On the outskirts of Peninsula Valdez this town was originally settled by Welsh immigrants last century. My brief experience in Buenas Aires was brief, to say the least. arriving off the plane i proceeded to get lost in the airport looking for immigration. fortunately i was not the only person, so it didn't look bad for me. At the airport, the customs officials waved me through without any looking or inspection of my baggage (nor stamp on the passport). i just dropped my card off and left. hopefully this will not come back to bite me in the ass when i try to leave the country. I then went to the areoparque de Jorge Newbury (the domestic airport) where it was a zoo. In Pto. ... read more
