This will be the final blog post from my 2015 PanAmerican Highway riding adventure. Today Tuesday I am meeting with a shipping agent here in Buenos Aires to discuss timeline and logistics for shipping back the motorcycle to Seattle. Once all documents are in order, I will really be looking forward to taking a flight back to the US to meet my family and to return to work. However, as of today, I don’t know exactly when I will be able to fly out. I am kinda hopeful that I should be able to fly back to the US by the end of this week (fingers crossed). Before I end this journey and blog post, I want to take the opportunity and recognize all the people and organizations that have, implicitly and explicitly made this motorcycle ... read more

Distance driven today: 255 miles / 410 km Cumulative distance driven: 15,552 miles / 25,298 km Yesterday’s trip: Mar del Plata to Buenos Aires, Argentina Last day of riding: yes Yesterday morning I left the very agreeable city of Mar del Plata and headed to Buenos Aires for the very final leg on my long PanAmerican highway trip. It was indeed a pleasurable ride, with blue skies, a bright shining sun, and a highway with very light traffic. As I was entering Buenos Aires I could not help but feel a sense of accomplishment. At the same time I was, for the very first time, hit be the realization that this long riding trip was now coming to its end. I will therefore attempt below to summarize my PanAmerican ride in the only way that I ... read more

Distance driven today: 298 miles / 480 km Cumulative distance driven: 15,297 miles / 24,618 km Today’s trip: Bahia Blanca to Mar del Plata, Argentina It is funny how we take certain things for granted, and how a little bit of perspective can make us appreciate even the smallest of things. Today’s ride would normally have been deemed as being rather uneventful. However, in the light of yesterday’s rather miserable day consisting of constant rain, I can honestly say that I fully enjoyed riding for an entire day without a single drop of rain falling from the sky, no clouds in the sky, and with no fatal traffic accidents witnessed. On top of that, the temperature was much warmer today compared to yesterday when it was practically a degree or two above freezing. Today also marked ... read more

Distance driven today: 421 miles / 678 km Cumulative distance driven: 15,003 miles / 23,531 km Today’s trip: Buenos Aires to Bahia Blanca, Argentina Record in longest distance driven in a day: yes Record in wettest ride ever: it poured down for 10 straight hours More clutch issues: unfortunately yes I left the hotel in Buenos Aires at 7am, in order to put in a really long day and make headway toward Tierra del Fuego. Unfortunately, it was raining when I left Buenos Aires, and it continued to rain hard for the next 10 hours. But a little bit of rain was not what made today’s riding probably the second most challenging day of this trip. It wasn’t even the very strong wind, blowing from the east across the open plains, at over 40 mph / ... read more

Distance driven: 40 miles / 65 km Cumulative distance driven: 14,621 miles / 23,531 km Complete motorcycle overhaul, including fixing the faulty clutch: yes Zoe’s last day on the PanAerican adventure: yes, she just took a flight to the US The goal of the first half of the day was to get the faulty clutch fixed. In addition, a larger service was due. I headed out early in the morning to get to the main authorized BMW dealership in Buenos Aires. From our hotel, close to the international Buenos Aires airport, it took over 2 hours in very dense traffic, to get to the dealership. Well there, the mechanics did a great job of prioritizing my bike, even though I just dropped in, without an appointment. Thanks guys at Trepad BMW Motorrad motors for dropping all ... read more

Distance driven last two days: 301 miles / 484 km Cumulative distance driven: 14,581 miles / 23,466 km Last two days’ trip: Laboulaye to Buenos Aires, Argentina Today’s ride was a wet story in many respects. It was raining heavy all morning as we left the little town of Laboulaye, and the wet weather continued for many hours. This made it rather hard for Christer to drive, not only because of the very poor visibility, but also because on top of the rain, he had to constantly pump up the pressure on the clutch handle. Overtaking big trucks on the road under these conditions was certainly not optimal, but then again what alternatives did we really have? As a result, we had to make rather frequent stops as gas stations along the road, and get something ... read more

I really should probably list this as somewhere over Brazil or something, but we'll go with Buenos Aires for old times' sake. This was our last day in South America, which was sad. We woke up for a 7:00 breakfast before our bus came through at 8:00. A bit of time in the airport, and we caught our flight to Buenos Aires around 10:45. After landing in the city airport, we took a taxi to downtown to change money one last time for lunch and a cab to the international airport. Lunch was one last bout of empanadas at our favorite empanada place near the school. We hung out there for a while and met a Canadian dancer who speaks no Spanish and was very confused about pricing. To be fair, pricing is confusing here. Many ... read more

It's hard to believe it's all over, but here we are. We woke up this morning and had the last couple hours to wander the city and pack before heading out at 1:00. The airport is well outside the city - I'm not sure why; it's not like there's a lot of people demanding land there. We arrived and hung around for an hour before boarding on our way back to BA. In Buenos Aires, we got to our hotel and dropped off our suitcases for the last night. I spent some time repacking, as I'll need very different clothing in Santiago and Iguazú than in El Calafate, and I don't intend on paying to bring both suitcases with me. A group of us then went out to an Italian restaurant called Filo. We were just ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Tigre July 28th 2015

For our last day in Buenos Aires, we spent it...not in Buenos Aires. We went out to El Tigre, which is the town where the Paraná River meets the River Plate. The delta is impressive, with a bunch of inhabited islands and murky brown waters that are actually clean enough to swim in. The color comes from the silt carried downstream. The island inhabitants are mostly disconnected and lead a very different lifestyle. Most of their houses look like those "mini-houses" you see online, with only a room or two of space and just very efficient use of what they have. Trash boats come around every few days to pick up whatever they've created, and supermarket boats make regular trips. Medical boats with a physical therapist, a dentist, and a general practitioner also make rounds, and ... read more

And with that, we're done (with classes). We graduated today, if you'd like to call it that. Truly what it was is we went in, filled out a survey on how it all went, talked with our classes for a couple hours, and then received our evaluations (not our final grades, per se, but more like how we did in the class. Our actual grades are more based on effort so as long as that's reflected, you're good) and diplomas. And free food. Which is always good. After that, a couple of us went to change money one last time so we have enough in Patagonia, then we all split up to go get our laundry done and start packing. I, as per the usual, went for a run first. Then laundry, hanging out, and dinner. ... read more
