R : We have reached something of an impass. I have always wanted to go to Patagonia - it was a "must" for our trip, and had been since day one. Our plan from Buenos Aires was to head south to Patagonia and in specific see the glaciers and Torres del Paine national park in Chile. But it wasn't to be. The next blog is more about the frustrations we have been feeling at this point in the trip. In no way do we forget how lucky we are to be able to do this trip, but at the same rate, it becomes your life, and when things don't go to plan, the worries and frustrations feel the same as any impass you might find at work or at home. It hasn't helped that both of ... read more

So much for that last trip. For now. Right now it's all about Patagonia. We will be gone almost three weeks and it is an adventure we are both very excited about. This is also a tour, beginning in Buenos Aires and ending in Santiago, with a cruise of Tierra del Fuego and stops in a few national parks in Chile inbetween. This will be our second time in Argentina, the first time being the year before last when we visited Buenos Aires and Iguaçu Falls on our own. I (and a cast of thousands!) loved Iguaçu Falls, but Buenos Aires stole my heart. The city proper, particularly the Recoleta and Palermo Barrios were wonderfully walkable, with people everywhere all day and late into the night. On the streets we visited, we never once had that ... read more

(Behind in my blog, so going to post 3 at a time!) Buenos Aires was the starting point of our South America trip – and it was a great place to start – a very cool city with a European feel. We started off in an area of the town called San Telmo – which is a bit of a run-down area that used to be lively back in the day. It is very nice though – just a little older and run-down. The one thing that San Telmo is most famous for is it’s massive street market on Sundays. By massive I mean like 2km of market stalls! We went there to check it out more than once. It was pretty good. In fact I – who generally hate markets – bought more things than ... read more

Wednesday January 27th, 2016. Buenos Aires, Argentina Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and is its largest city. It has a population of approximately 2,890,151. The city is divided into 48 districts. People from Buenos Aires are known as "Porteños" (people of the port). The city is the birthplace of the current pope, Francis, who was the former Archbishop of Buenos Aires. The city is known for its European-style architecture, rich culture and the Argentine Tango. It hosted the first Pan American Games in 1951 and the 1978 FIFA World Cup and in 2018 will host the Summer Youth Olympics. A settlement at the present day site of the city was established briefly in 1536 by conquistador Pedro de Mendoza. However, attacks by the local indigenous tribes forced the new settlers to move to Asunción ... read more

I took off my eye mask and checked the time, it was one in the afternoon. I wonder if Leo is regretting anything right now? I let Jon sleep a little bit longer as I went downstairs to work on some writing and go for a stroll around Buenos Aries. The city itself has an interesting collaboration of new design contracted inside of old buildings. It was a young city, thriving off of twenty-somethings all in the spirit of wanderlust. The weather was hot, but with a breeze which made walking around much more bearable. It surprised me how many pizza shops there were, but I guess that’s what you get in a touristy city. Jon was sitting in the lounge with two coffees on the table. When I walked into the room he looked up ... read more

Whoa, writing will become an issue, I can tell. Jon and I have been adventuring non-stop. I’m having so much fun, I never want to put it on pause to write! When the plane from Santa Cruz landed into Buenos Aires, I gathered my luggage and ran into the nearest bathroom. I hadn’t showered in three days at this point, not because I’m gross — just because there was no time from Uyuni to the airport. In the bathroom, I gave myself what my grandmother lovingly taught me was a “whore bath.” With the sink water, I brushed the teeth, washed the face, pits, etc. I covered myself in make-up to hide the exhaustion and dirt. I doused myself in perfume. My favorite part was watching the locals watching me with confusion and disgust. Whatever. A ... read more

Jon and I ate at Brasserie Petanque, a restaurant near Milhouse. It was delicious! We split Seafood Paella. It was a large, two story restaurant. Our table was lit by candlelight and the server had strategically placed us in the cozy corner of the place as to have some privacy between us. It was raining outside, which made the restaurant even cozier. We were planning on eating quick and spending the night socializing at the hostel. Dinner for us was catching up, learning new things about each other and laughing, mostly. Time had slipped away from us. I had taken a sip from my drink and looked up. Jon and I had become the last people there. It must have been around 1 or 1:30 in the morning and we left. Hand-in-hand, we ran through the ... read more

Now that we've left Buenos Aires and moved on to Brazil we wanted to share a few observations during our stay in Argentina. We feel we made the right decision to start in BsAs and stay there for the first two months. It's been a great experience - it's an amazing country and BsAs is a lot fun. It also gave us the opportunity to get into the 'sabbatical vibe' (so easy! can't believe it's already been two months). We could easily spend more time here (still have a few points of interest left on our To Do List). Below, are a few observations, some good, some bad. - There are still many things that can be improved in AR, but there is free wifi everywhere. Literally! In parks, metro stations, buses, restaurants, cafes, etc. - ... read more
