Námafjall Geothermal Area

"All around are great and small craters, recalling a diagram of the moon, which have been explored by many geologists".--Baedeker 1912. "From Reykjahlſö we ascend E. (fine view of the lake behind) through the Námaskarð (‘mine's pass’); on the right rises the Námafjall (1634 ft.), the slope of which is full of sulphur-springs. The drive through the Mývatn was a day of encountering one spectacular natural feature after another. Now on the other side of the Eyjafjörður from Akureyri, the coach ascended the slope of Vaðlaheiðar mountain. Rather than go around it, we took a tunnel through the mountain.
