Gilded bust of St. Servatius

Gilded bust of St. Servatius, ca. 1580. Treasury, Basiliek Sint Servaas - Basilica of Saint Servatius. It is a reliquary, containing parts of the saint’s skull. "The Church Treasury (Schatkamer), which since 1873 has occupied a chapel of its own, is worthy of inspection. The objects shown, said to have belonged to St. Servatius, include a key of electrum (a mixture of gold and silver) presented to the saint by Pope Damascus (376), his crozier, stick, and portable altar. An enamelled golden cross, with an antique cameo and the figure of Christ carved in ivory, dates from the 10th century. Textile fragments of the 4-16th cent.; ecclesiastical utensils of the 13-16th cent., etc."--Baedeker 1910. DSC_0140
